A new set of rules
Emma Callis
When you here the word rules you may think go to sleep at 9:30 or
Go to School every day but the book rules by Cynthia Lord puts a new spin on
every day activities. The main character Catherine has an autistic brother
named David. To David every thing needs to be broken down into a rule.
Simple instincts for humans like keep your clothes on are difficult and
don't make sense to David so Catherine makes rules so David will understand.
The rules are a way for Catherine to avoid embarrassment.
In the story Catherine is ecstatic when a new girl her age moves
in next door. Catherine fantasizes about how this girl and she will become
friends but when it comes time to meet her David messes that up too by
taking his clothes off and freaking out on Kristi. Catherine was so
embarrassed that she couldn't even talk to Kristi.
So a bored Catherine goes to the OT where she meets a boy named
Jason. Jason has a disability and cannot walk and cannot talk. Catherine and
Jason sort of bond over Catherine making communication cards for his
communication book. Through out the story Jason's and Catherine complicates
because of Jason's disability and how self conscious Catherine is.
This book was very realistic and connected with what it is like to
have a younger sibling or to be completely embarrassed and other things to.
This made the book very likeable and good. What I didn't like about the book
is that it took me a very long time to grab on and really get truly
interested in what was going on. This book was overall very nice but still
had room for improvement.
