Hidden from the World
Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a fiction novel with a mysterious twist. The heroine of the story, thirteen-year old Jessie Keyser, lives (or so she thinks) in the town Clifton, Indiana in 1840. Jessie lives a sheltered life with her blacksmith father, midwife mother and many siblings. Life is uneventful, school is dull, and the unpopular teacher, Mr. Smythe, is a grouch as always. But this sort of village life is normal for Jessie, and that is how she likes it.
Soon after that, diphtheria sweeps the town; one by one, Clifton’s children begin getting sick. When the illness strikes her youngest daughter, Katie, Mrs. Keyser decides she has to something. She has no choice but to tell Jessie, the truth. It is really 1996. Clifton is a recreated village meant to accurately depict a village in the 1800’s. There are hidden cameras throughout Clifton, filming their lives to educate tourists. Clifton started out as an ethical idea. Essential medicine and food was supplied during shortages. Children were told about the outside world at the age of twelve and were allowed to decide for themselves if they wanted to continue living in Clifton or not. As time went on the medicine and emergency food supply was discontinued and no one was allowed to speak of the outside world. Thus, there is no way to cure the diphtheria with out the medication.
Since Mrs.Keyser cannot fit into her old 20th century clothes, Jessie is the only chance Clifton has to save itself. Jessie must now venture into the modern world to seek diphtheria medication to save Clifton’s children, and her sister. Baffling with the information her mother just gave her, but sensing the urgency of the situation, Jessie must summon her bravest self. Jessie struggles to make sense of things like automobiles, pay phones and photographs while she looks for help in a whole new century. Eventually a press conference solves Jessie’s problems as the public grows aware of the epidemic in Clifton. A major controversy begins; the public is appalled at how immoral this project has become. Finally the Clifton creators/enthusiasts are brought to justice, but not before Jessie must face numerous challenges.
All things considered, I liked this book a lot and would recommend it to young teens and especially to those who enjoy a science-fiction style of writing. The book is action packed with very few lulls and very often asks the question: “What would you do…?” My answer to this question was normally: “I have no idea,” but the book would entertain a good problem solver very easily. I liked how fast the author jumped into the action within the first couple chapters and didn’t require a dull and lengthy introduction. Haddix shows teens a new idea of home and family through Jessie, and portrays how a 13-year-old might deal with such tough situations when a parent isn’t able to help. The author makes you think about where human morals begin and end, mixing it in with a very well written plot.

Walk Two Moons and me: On a Road Trip across the United States
In the novel, Sal and her grandparents stop at many national landmarks. One that I learned about was Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.
A few things I learned about were
· American-Indians have lived in the Yellowstone area for at least 11,000 years.
· Old Faithful geyser was the first geyser in Yellowstone to receive a name.
· More than 137000 eruptions have been recorded in Old Faithful’s history.
· Water of Old Faithful was recorded at 244 degrees Fahrenheit. (72 feet below ground level)
· Eruptions can shoot 3,700 –8,400 US gallons of boiling water, 106-185 feet into the air. These eruptions can last 1.5-5 minutes long.
The past information is from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Faithful_Geyser and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_National_Park
I found this photo of Old Faithful Geyser at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Faithful_Geyser
If I could travel anywhere in the United States, I would go to San Fransisco, California.
I would travel there because...
I would love to visit San Francisco because I love big cities. And San Fran definitely qualifies with 7.2 million people, making it the 4th most populated city in California and the 14th in the U.S. I love the beaches and liberal culture of this city, I have also wanted to experience the renowned San Francisco Zoo ,which houses more than 250 animal species. And of course the Golden Gate Bridge which was the longest spanning suspension bridge for a while after it was completed.
The past information is based on facts from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco,_California
I found these photos of a San Francisco trolley, and the Golden Gate Bridge at http://www.nps.gov/nero/nhlphoto/1stPlaceSanFranciscoCableCars.jpg and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:SF_From_Marin_Highlands3.jpg.

I'm so glad you read this thought-provoking story. It really seems like one of those books that makes us not only think about what we would do if we were the character, but also makes us think about our world and how moral/ethical it is or isn't. Great job of reviewing it!

COOL! I don't think I've ever read "Hidden from the World". Sounds like a good book.
