Introduction:

Do you think you know a lot about basketball? Well, actually you DON’T. Basketball has a lot of background history and is very interesting to learn about. While I was taking notes and writing out my outline I was fascinated by all of the facts that just come of one page of a book or the Internet. Basketball is one of my favorite sports and in fact the most sport ever recorded on television other than football. I used to play on my school basketball team. We were called the East Lansing Trojans. I wanted to let you know that I wrote about basketball because I love it so much and because I have always wanted to know who really invented basketball and what all the rules, famous players, history and the statistics of basketball were. So here is my report and I hope you enjoy it.

What is basketball?

What is basketball you ask, well as a matter of fact Basketball’s official definition is an indoor court game between two teams of five active players, in which each are trying to score point against one another propelling a boll through a 10 feet high hoop under organized rules. The official definition of a basket baller is a basketball player or a person who generally likes to play basketball or shoot hoops once in a while. Shooting the ball through the basket above scores most points; the team with more points at the end of the game wins. The ball can be advanced through the court by bouncing or passing it between teammates.

Through time, basketball has developed to involve common techniques of shooting, passing and dribbling, as well as players’ positions, and offensive and defensive structures.

History and Background of Basketball:

The sharp cultural differences however brought international expansion to an end. It was then soon apparent that the United States was a whole league of its own, and that basketball was firmly rooted in American culture. Many Americans began to think basketball games represented the promise for a better life for many successful players, but for the rest of the world basketball was just a game. The NBA story began on June 6th, 1946, with the founding of a basketball association of America at the commodore hotel inn.

The history of basketball has been going on for many generations. There are a lot of famous basketball players that have made that history such a memorable experience. The Msu basketball team is known for its pride in its team and their trust in each other. The people that have played basketball and are now no longer alive are remembered by their appearance in the basketball team that they played on. The history of basketball has a very long story to it and probably is the 3rd biggest story in the entire sports career. The famous people that have made basketball so interesting are Micheal Jordan, Markquise Gray, Raymar Morgan, Idong Ibok, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, William Chase, Charles Barkley, Erving Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Larry Bird, Scott Pippen, Denis Rodman, Isaih Tomas, Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler and Shawn Kemp.

The invention of basketball:

Do you know who invented basketball and if basketball has a birthday? Well if you don't, the man who invented basketball was a Canadian named Dr. James Naismith. The year was 1891 and was made in Springfield, Massachusetts. Unlike other sports, whose beginnings a bit uncertain, basketball actually has a birthday. The date of the first basketball game is known with absolute accuracy is the day that basketball celebrates its birthday. Basketball did not evolve from other sports like football and soccer. Naismith was 30 years old when he had decided to create basketball. Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario and had attended McGill University in Montreal.

What are fouls?

I suppose you want to know the definition for what fouls are, right? Okay, well the official definition for fouls is when a player makes an attempt to unfairly disadvantage an opponent through physical contact is illegal and is called a foul in the basketball terms. Players that are fouled either receive a ball pass inbounds, to attempt to make a shot at the basket and or receive one or more free throws depending on if the foul was in the act of shooting, depending on weather the shot was successful. One point is awarded for making a free throw, which is attempted from a line 15 feet from the basket. Blatant fouls with excessive contact or that are not an attempt or play the ball are called unsportsmanlike fouls will result in ejection. A player or coach shows poor sportsmanship, for instance, by arguing with a referee or by fighting with another player, can be charged with a more serious foul called a technical foul.

The Equipment and Violations:

Equipment:

The only really needed equipment in basketball is the basketball and the court. Competitive levels reqiure to use more equipment such as clocks, score sheets, alternating possession arrows, and a whistle- operated stop-clock system. A regulation basketball court in international games is 28 by 15 meters and NBA is 94 by 50 feet. T.I. and Bow Wow play basketball and both are very good at it. Most women use a 20 oz. ball and the men use a 22 oz. ball. A steel basket with net and backboard hang over each end of the court.

Violations:

The words violations may confuse you with a different word, but really the definition is simply just that the ball may be advanced towards the basket by being shot, passed between players, thrown, tapped, rolled or dribbled. If the ball does not remain on the court, the last teammate that touches the ball before it travels out of bounds has to forfeit its possession.

The ball-handler may not move both of there feet without dribbling, also known as a traveling, or may he or she dribble with both hands or catch the ball in between their dribbles, a violation is also called double dribbling. No player may interfere with the basket or the ball on its downward flight to the basket, or while it is on the rim, a violation known as goaltending. If a defensive player goal tends, the attempted shot is considered to have been successful.

Shooting:

Of all the basketball skills you need to know, shooting is the most important. From the day that a player first discovers basketball, he or she practices mainly on their shooting skills. Through the rules do not specify any positions whatsoever; they have evolved as part of basketball. During the first five decades of basketball's evolution, one guard, two forwards, and two centers or two guards, two forwards, and one center were used.

Positions:

Since the 1980's more specific positions have evolved, namely:

1. Point Guard: Usually the fastest player on the team organizes the team's offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right player at the right time.

2. Shooting Guard: Creates a high volume of shoots on offense; guards the opponent’s best perimeter player on defense.

3. Small Forward: Often primarily responsible for scoring points via cuts to the basket and dribble penetration; on defense seeks the rebounds and then steals it, but sometimes plays more actively.

4. Power Forward: Plays offensively often with his back to the basket; on defense, plays under the basket or against the opposing power forward.

5. Center: Uses size to score, to protect the basket closely, or to rebound.

Some types of shooting names are free throw; lay up, the jump shot, one –hand push shot, the dunk, and the hook shot.

The slam-dunk:

The actual definition for a slam dunk shot is a field goal made by slamming the ball through the basket from above the rim. Not every basketball player can execute a slam-dunk.  In order to pull a slam-dunk, you must have greater than average height, and extraordinary jumping ability. The dunk shot has become much more than a 2- pointer. It is also a way of intimidating you opponent’s team, of psyching him or her out. It is one of those ways of showing off in front of crowds or your team to impress them. A backward, over-the-head, rim-rattling dunk bring the crowd to their feet screaming.

The free throw:

Do you know what a free throw is? I bet even people that don’t care for basketball know what a free throw is. The definition for a free throw is the shot rewarded to a player who is the victim of a foul or any other rule violation is called” free” because there can be no defensive interference interaction until the ball is shot or when it hits the rim. The other players on both teams line up along each of the sides of the free throw line from the moment he or she was handed the ball.

The Lay-up:

The lay-up is a shot that is commonly used at the end of a fast break or when the shooter has a clear shot straight to the basket. The instruction manual for basketball clearly states that the shot is best when executed by pushing off the side the inside foot while hoisting the ball with both hands, At the top of your jump, you must extend your shooting arm toward the basket and lay the ball gently against the backboard.

The jump shot:

The jump shot is known as the #1 shot in basketball history since the 1950’s. Joe Fulks, who had joined the NBA’s Philidahipa Warriors in 1946, is created with being the first pro player to use it. He then nicknamed it the “Jumpin’ Joe”, Fulks would hustle down the court with the ball in his hand, then suddenly out of the blue stop, leap straight up in the air and shoot the ball with one-hand at the top of his jump.

Rebounding:

Getting the ball as it comes off the backboard of rim is another essential skill, as vital to a team’s success as passing and shooting the ball. A team that cannot control the boards wins. Actually, there are two types of rebounding – offensive and defensive. An offensive rebound occurs when a player on the shooter’s team reaches for the ball. Rebounding is never just a walk in the park. Often there are three or four players that are going up for the ball at the same time. The players may get elbowed, shoved, or bumped. Rebounding requires strength and quickness and a fair amount of courage.

Dribbling:

What is Dribbling? That’s a good question. Dribbling is a player that is permitted to walk or run with the ball unless he or she dribbles it – that is, bounces it. Have you ever watched a pro player dribble? If you haven’t next time you go to and NBA game notice the way he or she dribbles with their heads up looking straight ahead, rather than a player that regularly looks down and don’t pay attention to were they are going. Dribbling is the way the players moves the ball without passing it to their teammates. There is usually no reason why a player needs to dribble when their teammates are open for a pass or if they can shoot.

Michael Jordan “ Air Jordan”

In June 1996 Michael Jordan had beat the Chicago-Seattle finals for the first time in history. Michael Jordan was born February 17th, 1963 in Brooklyn New York, and was 6’6” and 216 lbs. He went to Laney High School, Wilmington, North Carolina and went to college; In North Carolina: He then joined the NCAA championship in 1989. He was crowned NBA Rookie of the year and won a slam-dunk contest in 1987 and 1988. He won the Gold medial in the 1984 Olympic games and was awarded to Michael Jordan inhered of his win. Michael Jordan was # 23 on the Chicago Bulls team. His fathers real name was James Jordan and his father was a foreman general Electric and Deloris Jordan was his mother and she worked as the head of customer relations at a bank. The Jordan kids had to work for pocket money during the summer, but Michael couldn’t stand working. He hated his daily routine.

He was an outstanding student and a promising athlete at Virgo high school. His first year was divided, because he played football, baseball, and basketball. He was excellent at all 3 sports and worked hard on all the skills he needed to learn for each sport. Baseball was the first sport Michael Jordan loved, but when basketball came that was the new favorite. Michael’s first four-year contract was 4 million dollars. In August his father James was murdered. All of his Beliefs suddenly just went down hill and then realizing how fast people can disappear and then decided it was about time he put his life back to normal.

Shaquille O’ Neal

Shaquille O’ Neal’s real name is Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal. He was born on March 6th, 1972, and is frequently referred to simply as “Shag”, and is an American Professional basketball player, rapper, and actor. He’s wisely perceived as one of the most dominant players in history of the NBA and one of the most Quotable athletes in the world.  His hometown is Newark, New Jersey/ Nationality: American. He went to LSU for college and was awarded with the NBA championship 4 times in a row. He remains estranged from his biological father, known as Joseph Toney of Newark. His father has struggled with drug addiction and was imprisoned when O’Neal was an infant. On his 1994 reap album, Shag Fu: The return, O’Neal voiced his feelings of disdain for his father in the song and the song title was “Biological Didn’t Bother”, and then reversed the name to “Phil is my real father”.

O’Neal has a mansion in Orlando, Florida and has a homemade movie theater with two rows of 5 retractable Superman lights and another superman symbol on the floor, a big screen and a 5.1 surround sound. He also has an indoor basketball court. O’Neal had left LSU for the NBA after three years. He did promise his mom that he would eventually return to his studies and complete his bachelor’s degree. He is also a hip-hop singer and one of his occupations is a rapper.

Conclusion:

My conclusion is that basketball is probably the funniest sport you can play. I have never learned so much about basketball before and now that I have it is very interesting. Over all basketball is still the most publicized and watched game in history and as you have read a lot of interesting famous player and techniques. I have always wanted to be a professional basketball player, but then I wouldn’t get to have the job that I have dreamed about since I was 3 years old. I really want to be a nurse and when my uncle died I realized that I wanted to help everybody I possibly could. I wrote about Michael Jackson and Shaquille O’Neal because they are the most top famous NBA players other than the Msu Players. I hope you enjoyed my basketball report because this report means a lot to me and took a lot of time to do and think about what to write.
