This story, written by Aryn Kyle, takes place in Desert Valley, Colorado. The main character’s name is Alice, and it’s a story about a family who live on a ranch and have to deal with financial loss and depression. Her father works on the farm where they live and her mother has never left her room since Alice was born. When Alice’s sister Nona leaves them to marry a cowboy and 12 year old Alice and her family are left to manage the farm on their own, they have little money and have to make some changes to pay the bills. Shelia their only lesion rider buys her sister’s horse Yellow Cap and they have to board horses to make more money. Sheila wants to be friends with Alice but Alice doesn’t really like her. Soon after a girl named Polly Cain drowns in a near by river and Alice uncovers mysteries about this strange girls past she then lies to the teacher Polly liked and say’s she was Polly’s best friend.
Later Alice’s father gives her a horse named Darling who came untrained but is from a really good blood line. Only Alice can ride the horse. Alice and Sheila compete together in a horse show and Alice takes first place and Sheila gets second place. They begin to become friends. Meanwhile Alice’s father begins to like Patty Jo, a boarder at the ranch. When Alice finds this out Patty Jo buys her a bunch of cloths and takes her to get her hair cut. Towards the end of the book, Alice’s sister and her new husband come back to the ranch. They are living at the ranch but don’t tell why they came back.
The God of Animals is a very interesting book. It will keep you reading. I would recommend this book to someone who likes to read long stories because the book is over 300 pages long. One thing I didn’t like about the book was the main character Alice. She lied to make her life more interesting, like she says her mom travels to California on business trips and that her dad is a professor who studies stars and planets. She would be a better main character if she did not lie so much.
