Skin and Bones

Anorexia is an eating disorder where people starve themselves. They eat very small amounts of food and often do excessive exercise. Anorexic people are afraid of becoming fat and even when they are extremely thin they still see themselves as fat. Their bodies are not healthy and they are starved from the nutrients they need. Anorexia is a serious problem that should not be overlooked.

The first thing to learn about anorexia is the causes. The more you know about it the easier you can prevent it. One cause of Anorexia is habits of dieting. When your dieting you may go on an extremely strict diet and think that you are being healthy when your really becoming anorexic. Another common reason is the belief that if your thinner you’ll be happier. At school you may not get a lot of attention so for some people it is just a way to get noticed. While others might use it as a way to try and get back at their parents, to say that their in control. In a lot of cases anorexia is influenced by fashion. People see the super thin models and think that, that is what they need to look like or people won’t like them. Some people just aren’t satisfied with who they are and think they would look better if they were different. Anorexia is also caused from problems with family and or romantic relationships. When there are problems with family people may feel down and depressed and just not eat, and not really notice their actually becoming anorexic. For some growing up in an environment where you had to eat everything you were served can have an affect on it. Although, one of the largest aspects is what your peers think. Someone might start out being completely fine with themselves. But when someone makes a comment like, “you’re fat” it can completely change their ideals. One more thing is when someone has very low self esteem. This can cause simple comments to do a lot more damage than people would realize. As you can see anorexia has many causes.

Not only does anorexia have many causes it also has many effects. Anorexia causes lot of metal and physical stress. Because anorexia is often caused by stressful events starving your body cause you to not think straight, and you will have less energy to deal with and focus on things. Small problems will become larger and things will become more and more complicated. When people that are starting or going through puberty have anorexia their physical development may be very slowed and in women menstruation may stop or it might not start to begin with. When people have anorexia they are malnourished and very unhealthy. Imbalances in the chemistry of the body can occur. You may also feel light headed and experience spells of fainting from hunger. Other symptoms are dry scaly skin, soft fluffy hair on the face and arms, and body weight that is 20% below normal.

Anorexia mostly occurs in young women between the ages of 14-25. Ninety percent of anorexic people are female, the other ten percent are male. This is because women are usually more emotional and sensitive. Girls also tend to be more self conscious, and care more about their weight and what they look like. As i have pointed out before our society today has an image of thin and stickly being beautiful so eveyone is pressured to try and be skinny.

Treatment for anorexia begins with admitting to the fact that you have a problem. A lot of times people deny that they have anything wrong with them. If a person’s anorexia has become extremely bad they may need to go to a  hospital and be fed through a tube. But the first part of treatment for anorexia is learning about and then restoring basic nutrition. Another thing to learn about is the disorder that you have. The next thing is to learn what your negative triggers are. A negative trigger is something that might make someone feel depressed or the way they were when they had the disorder. If the negative triggers aren’t exposed than a relapse can be more common. In a reasonable amount of cases psychiatric help my be required. By going to a trained counselor or psychiatrist you will have a chance to talk about what may have led to the problem in the first place. Sometimes long term psychotherapy is needed. Finally a hobby should be taken up. This way when people are tempted to cope with things by not eating or something they can do the hobby. It could be journaling, drawing, playing an instrument, just something that calms you down.

One thing that people sometimes confuse with anorexia is bulimia. Bulimia is similar to anorexia in some ways but it is also quite different. Bulimia is usually caused by similar events but doesn’t have all the same effects. Bulimia is made up of two steps. First someone binges, or eats a large amount of food. Often the person isn’t even hungry when they start eating and they just eat everything really fast. Binging is often done in private. After binging the person usually purges the food in some way. Some take laxatives to release it and others may do excessive exercise to burn off the meal. But the most common way is forced vomiting. Although bulimic people may often maintain a normal weight they are not healthy. Some effects from bulimia are stomach pain, sore throats, problems with heartburn, frequent cuts or scratches on their knuckles, swollen glands in the neck or face, and damaged enamel on teeth from stomach acid. Bulimia rarely requires hospitalization.

Anorexia has many causes that aren’t very good. People lean towards it and they end up worse off then when they started. The effects and treatment may be long term and it really isn’t very fun to starve yourself let alone make yourself throw up. Anorexia is a very serious problem and it should not be overlooked.

Mind or Body

“Ring, Ring!”  The phone rang.

“Hello?” I answered.

“John! John! You need to come to the office now, I’ve made a break through!” Bryce yelled.

“Bryce, do you have any idea what time is it?” I asked.

“Um, two in the morning?” He replied.

“No, actually its 4.” I said rather annoyed.

“Oh, whatever just hurry up and get over here!” He answered.

The year is 2035. My name is Dr. Hoffman(John) and my partner Dr. Schuster(Bryce) and I  have been working on a project to manipulate cells in disabled people. We will be able to make them work so that someone who wasn’t able to walk will be able to. They can also regrow bones and tissue faster.

Whoa, I can’t believe it.  This could finally be it.  We're going to be famous, I think.

Although it would have been a little nicer if it hadn't been so late or is it early, considering its 4 in the “morning”. For a second I start zoning out, next thing I know I hear a huge crash and my body goes numb, after that I black out.

After the crash I went in and out of consciousness.  I remembered sirens and yelling, bright lights and Dr. Schuster arguing with someone about something. When I awoke I was lying in a hospital bed and I couldn't move from my chest down. After a while a nurse came in and explained that I ran a red light at an intersection and caused a 5-car collision.  I was paralyzed from the chest below. The nurse tried to reassure me and said that it could just be temporary but I doubted that. Then she told me I should get some rest and left the room.

All of a sudden I remembered why I was out driving in the first place, I had been going to the lab.  Dr. Schuster had just told me that he had made a breakthrough.  I realized now that I probably wouldn't be of any use to him for a long time and then it hit me.  I'm disabled.  I could be the first person to test the operation! After this I decided to take a nap before I got too excited.

Next thing I know there was Bryce shaking my shoulder, telling me to wake up. He said, "John, I know you're smart and you've probably figured this out already, but are you thinking what I'm thinking? I nodded and he said  he would have the operation ready in about a week.  I nodded and he left the room.

The next week went by fast - getting fed hospital food by nurses, sleeping a lot, thinking about what it could mean for me and Bryce if this operation worked.  Before I knew it I got moved to a new room onto an operating table.

“Ready?” Bryce asked me.

“Ready” I said.

Then I was given a large shot and I lost  consciousness. When I woke up this time, it was to the smiling doctors and surgeons around me.

“Did it work I ask?” I asked.

“Why don't you check?” Dr. Schuster said.

I smiled and got up.  I could stand and move my arms. Everything felt as good as new.  All of sudden anger filled my thoughts, and I just saw Dr. Schuster and me, and suddenly I couldn't control myself and I jumped across the room, my hands around Dr. Schuster's throat.

I heard loud screams and wanted  to tell whoever was screaming to shut up but then I realized it was me. One of the doctors in the room injected some sort of tranquilizer into my leg.  Everything went black. When I awoke, I realized the operation obviously went wrong.  I was told that I was being held in this cell for attempted murder. Will things ever be the same?

Book Review

(The Shining by Stephen King approx. 700pages)

The Shining is about a family named the Torrance's. Danny who is 5 years old and is the child of Jack and Wendy Torrance has the power of the shining. He can see and hear things from the past and sometimes has visions of the future. Jack, who is an ex-alcoholic and writer, has never really been able to keep much of a job; and so when his friend Al Shockley finds him a job as caretaker over the Overlook Hotel for the winter he takes it. When they get to the hotel everyone warns them to be cautious, and Danny has a brief conversation with Dick Hallorann, who informs Danny that he has the shining. The reason Halorann knows is because he has it too. At first things at the hotel seem relatively normal, but when Jack finds records of the Overlook Hotel's bloody past and starts going a little crazy, and Danny gets attacked by something, they all begin wondering if they will last the winter in the hotel.

I greatly enjoyed reading The Shining and also admired King's horrifying yet amazing way of writing. I can't say The Shining was as scary as I first assumed it would be upon hearing all the talk of King's bone chilling novel but I can say that if you get scared easily this probably isn't your type of book. On the other hand, I would give it a five star rating and highly recommend it.
