The City Of Splendors

A novel of Water Deep By Elaine Cunningham and Ed Greenwood

The place is Water Deep, a city in the fantasy realm of Farun. The time is late noon, and five of six lord-lings belonging to the group called the Gem Cloaks are up to no good. One of Vandroes Dyre(a local builder)’s worksites is their current choice of a mock battlefield. The damage inflicted by their play infuriates him. In the ensuing first chapters, the authors have set the loom brilliantly for a deep and interwoven tapestry.

Dyre’s daughters are walking home from a deal with a Nome weaver (one of them has the skill of being able to spin any thing into thread, including gems) when they are set upon by a few sailors in an ally. The Gem Cloaks swoop in with their shining namesakes and manage to beat off the men. A lasting friendship is formed.

A group called the New Day is being formed in an attempt to unmask the ruling body of Water Deep, whose identities are hidden. Dyre is at the head of the group. His daughters ask Lark, their maidservant to seek help from an old friend but the only way to get information to him is to leave it in a secret compartment. The space is in the mansion of a famous crime boss, the Serpent. During her attempt, Lark is caught by the Serpent, and now works for him, to give information to him about the New Day.

Three of the Gem Cloaks, including one Malark, are at a sleazy club, which is owned by the Serpent, in Dock ward. The masked lords of Water Deep have been doing some tunneling to spy on their enemies, making the foundation unstable and the club caves in, killing Malark.

On their way through Dock ward, the Gem Cloaks are spotted by some of the workers from the day they destroyed the worksite. The workers come out and a fight is started. Lord Piergeiron, the only unmasked lord, arrives on the seen wit ha group of watchmen. Previously unmentioned characters: Mrelder and Gloskin, two evil religious fanatics, hell bent on controlling Water Deep, are trying to get Piergeiron’s gorget (which controls the walking statues, 8 large stone guardians). In the tumult that follows, the mighty lord is wounded gravely and the two evildoers escape with their prize.

Beldar, a Gem Cloak, has gotten desperate in his quest for greatness and has met with Mrelder, who can graft parts of monsters onto a human body and has used this skill to create an army of half monsters. Beldar now wears a beholder’s eye in place of one of his own. What he doesn’t know is that Mrelder has partial control over his mind. Mrelder also shrunk and placed the gorget of Piergeiron in Beldar’s brain. The reason is that they presume that Piergeiron is dead or near it, and they think Beldar will be chosen as the next unmasked lord. They want to be in control of him when the time comes.

The novel is finished off with a dazzling ending full of excitement. Everything and everyone is woven together so completely that it would take pliers to pull it apart. No loose end is left untied. The climactic ending is not devoid of sadness though, and those who survive are left to clean up the dead and start life over (although some are not at all themselves in the end).

I would recommend this to anyone who loves reading, and for fantasy lovers, this is a must read. I liked this book because it kept me turning the pages well into the night, al the people were connected to each other one way or another, and the pure excitement of the ending is just amazing!!!!

htp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Cub_Geyser

Big Cub Geyser is a geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park in the United States.

Big Cub is part of the Lion's Group of geysers, a cluster of geysers that all share an underground connection. The other geysers in this group are Lion Geyser, Lioness Geyser, and Little Cub Geyser.

Lion is a fairly large geyser. It can reach 90 feet high and last over seven minutes. Lion erupts in a series of 1 to 7 or more eruptions. The initial eruption of the series is the tallest and lasts the longest. It can reach 90 feet. Unlike the other eruptions of the series, the initial eruption ends with a steam phase. Eruptions other than the initial, fall into two categories: majors and minors. Major eruptions last about 4 minutes and minors last about one minute. Both categories can reach about 50 feet in height.

“Mauna Loa

Hawaii (Hawaiian Islands

Volcano types:

    Shield volcano

    Caldera

    Pyroclastic cones

Summit Elev: 4170 m

Latitude: 19.475°N

Longitude: 155.608°W

Massive Mauna Loa shield volcano rises almost 9 km above the sea floor to form the world's largest active volcano. Flank eruptions are predominately from the lengthy NE and SW rift zones, and the summit is cut by the Mokuaweoweo caldera, which sits within an older and larger 6 x 8 km caldera. Two of the youngest large debris avalanches documented in Hawaii traveled nearly 100 km from Mauna Loa; the second of the Alika avalanches was emplaced about 105,000 years ago (Moore et al. 1989). Almost 90% of the surface of the basaltic shield volcano is covered by lavas less than 4000 years old (Lockwood and Lipman, 1987). During a 750-year eruptive period beginning about 1500 years ago, a series of voluminous overflows from a summit lava lake covered about one fourth of the volcano's surface. The ensuing 750-year period, from shortly after the formation of Mokuaweoweo caldera until the present, saw an additional quarter of the volcano covered with lava flows predominately from summit and NW rift zone vents.

The Island of Hawai`i (called the Big Island or Hawai`i Island) is a volcanic island in the U.S. state of Hawai`i in the Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,432 km²), it is the largest island in the United States and larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined.

http://www.panoramio.com/photo/860448

Hawai`i is said to have been named for Hawai`iloa, the legendary Polynesian navigator who first discovered it. However, other accounts attribute the name to the legendary land or realm of Hawaiki, a place from which the Polynesians originated (see also Manua), the place where they go in the afterlife, the realm of the gods.

The Island of Hawai`i is administered under the County of Hawai`i. The county seat is Hilo. It is estimated that as of the year 2003, the island had a resident population of 158,400.

Your book sounds like a real page-turner. I love it when everything comes together somehow --- it's surprising and satisfying as a reader. And as a writer it must be a real challenge.
