To Kill a Mockingbird

By: Emma Cutler

"It is a sin to kill a mockingbird." Says Atticus Finch, a main character in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.

Scout is a weird 7-year old girl. She doesn't act like a "lady" and her only two friends are her brother, Jem, and the boy who lives next door during the summer, Dill. Nobody can get Scout to be the weak, house working, pretty lady everybody wants her to be and thinks she should be. Not her maid, Calpurnia, or any of her aunts, and her mother died when she was two. Scout says she wants to focus more on having fun and looking for excitement, because the only fun thing for her was sneaking around the Radley place. She, Jem, and Dill all desperately want to meet the mysterious man who lives there, Nathan "Boo" Radley. Well, it was the only exciting thing. Until Atticus-a lawyer-is given a case to defend Tom Robinson, a 25-year-old black man charged with the rape of Mayella Ewell, a nineteen-year-old girl white girl. By the time of the trial, almost everybody in Maycomb County believes that Mr. Robinson raped Mayella. Just hope they are wrong.

I like this book because it was well written and for the most part interesting. But, I didn't like that the first hundred pages or so didn't really have a plot, it was really just small scenes that didn't go with the overall plot, and it was kind of boring, even though it was well written.

This book was banned because it talks a lot about rape, and for many minor swear-words. I  don't agree that this book should have been banned, because it is an amazing book and really positive message overall. I would write the message but it gives too much away about the ending/resolution.
