This Blinding Absence of Light Book Review

By: Tahar Ben Jelloun

Could you imagine live with no light, only starchy food, people dying around you. For days, months, years? For these people that is how they lived. For my book review I read the book this blinding absence of light by tahar ben jelloun.

In this book a group of people from the military are locked up in a cell with no light and only starchy foods. With their cellmates that they got to know dying around them. They don’t go into too much depth about how they got there but all we know is that they were told to attack the king and got put in the cell.

All of the people in this cell have numbers. These number got assigned by the order they were put in the cell. Some of them have names but we don’t know if they are real or made up. The main character/narrator is number 7 we don’t know his actual name. A lot of the characters go insane and die or get stung by scorpions one of the characters died from constipation even.

A part in this book that really moved me happened throughout the book really is when they recited poems and the bible. This was very empowering because through all the terrible things they were going through they found something to make it a little less worse. I thought this was really moving and amazing.

This book is very visual and gruesome so if you aren’t into those kind of books I would not suggest this to you. If I were to go back in time I would have probably waited to read this until I was a little older because again it was very gruesome and hard to comprehend. Overall I really liked the book there were times were it was almost boring because of the fact that they can’t do much besides die. But if you like more mature books then you should definitely read this it is an amazing story.
