Walk Two Moons Essay By~Luz Wittrock

In the book Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, there are some characters that don’t seem to be who they actually are. Sal (the main character) moves to Euclid, Ohio from Bybanks, Kentucky, because of her mother’s death. She is depressed but as soon as she gets to Euclid, she makes a new friend. This friend is Phoebe Winterbottom, and she helps Sal make her first judgement about someone, Mrs. Cadaver.

Sal doesn’t like Mrs. Cadaver. Sal feels like she was the whole reason she had to move from her home. She thinks her dad is romantically involved with her. This makes Sal even angrier because, it was just months after she and her father had lost her mother to a tragic bus accident. She felt like he didn’t care about her mother in the first place, or even her. Then while Sal is hanging out with Phoebe, she hears something startling. Phoebe tells her that Mrs. Cadaver is a widow. Her husband died, and Mrs. Cadaver supposedly killed him. Sal doesn’t believe her at first, but then, Phoebe tells her why she thinks so. Phoebe said that she has seen Mrs. Cadaver pulling trees across the lawn, Phoebe uses this evidence to prove that Mrs. Cadaver is strong. Phoebe thinks that if she is that strong she could’ve dug a grave for the body and thrown it in there by herself. Then Phoebe tells Sal her other piece of evidence. Cadaver means ‘dead body’. Sal doesn’t normally jump to conclusions but, the evidence leads her to believe that Mrs. Cadaver murdered her husband. This accusation was nowhere near the truth. Neither was Sal’s impression of her. Mrs. Cadaver was not a murderer. Her husband had been in a tragic car accident and was taken to the hospital. Mrs. Cadaver is a nurse and she was working the night her husband came in. She loved her husband and tried her best to save him. She couldn’t and he died. Mrs. Cadaver had also gone on a bus trip and sat next to Sal’s mother. They talked and got to know each other they became best friends on their way to Lewiston, Idaho. Then their bus flew off a cliff. Everyone died, except Mrs. Cadaver. Sal’s dad went out to Lewiston to see his wife’s grave. He also visited the only survivor. He wanted to be in touch with the last memories of his wife. Overall none of Sal’s impressions of Mrs. Cadaver were correct.

Sal also had another impression of someone-Phoebe’s mom, Mrs. Winterbottom.

Mrs. Winterbottom looked like she was leading a simple life. She would cook, clean and care for everyone in the house. She looked like she had a perfect marriage. When Sal would come over Mrs. Winterbottom would be wearing very simple, plain, boring clothes. Mrs. Winterbottom would watch her weight and cholesterol. She sometimes seemed sad but, when someone mentioned it she would snap right out of it. Then one day Mrs. Winterbottom went missing. She left notes for everyone in the house and she left food in the freezer. Sal kept telling Phoebe that she would come back but, Sal wasn’t completely sure about that. One day while Phoebe and Sal were at the university they saw Mrs. Winterbottom. She was kissing someone on the cheek. Was she having an affair? What was going on? Sal thought. Phoebe’s mom was wearing a white t-shirt, cute jeans and big hoop earrings. She was very different. A day or two later Phoebe’s mom came home. She came home with someone else though, a boy. Mrs. Winterbottom told everyone that it was her son. She had given him up for adoption a very long time ago and had just reunited with him. Sal’s impression of her was very off. Secretly Mrs. Winterbottom wanted a less simple life, more adventure and more freedom. Sal’s wasn’t the only person who had that judgement of her though. It was the attitude that Mrs. Winterbottom let on that made everyone think she liked a simple, plain life.

In conclusion we shouldn’t judge others by what we first see of them. Many people have a more complex story. It’s hidden from view until someone who understands them comes along. So as the saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
