"Sometimes the ideas come to me. Other times I have to sweat and almost bleed to make ideas come. It's a mysterious process, but I hope I never find out exactly how it works. I like a mystery, as you may have noticed."

J.K. Rowling is a renowned author. She has written many books that have led to success in her life, but just like everyone she had struggles. In this research paper I will go over her childhood, the beginning of her career, significant accomplishments, struggles, impacts on the world, and lessons that I have learned from J.K. Rowling's life.

Early Life/Childhood:

J.K. Rowling was born to Anne Volant Rowling and Peter Rowling on July 31st, 1965. She was born in Yate, United Kingdom. She lived there for four years then moved to Winterbourne, Gloucestershire. Winterbourne was a nearby village. J.K. attended her first school there. This school was St Michael's Primary School.  When at home J.Kwas a dreamer with a big imagination. She loved to narrate stories to her parents. She was very talented and wrote her first story when she was six. Three years later she moved again. J.Kmoved to Church Cottage, Tutshill. That was the last time she moved in her childhood years. In Church Cottage she attended a new school. This school was Wyedean Secondary school. In school she was often labeled as the quiet girl who was always reading or writing.

Beginning of Career:

J.KRowling had a very different start to her career compared to others. It started a long time before her career starting book. She was trying to get into college. She took the entrance exams but sadly, she wasn’t accepted. Instead she went to the University of Exeter. There she studied French and classics because of her love of reading and writing. She started college in 1983 and graduated in 1986. Afterwards, she moved to London and took all sorts of jobs. One day her train was delayed, and she came up with the idea of Harry Potter.  She kept brainstorming and adding to it for a few years. Then she moved to Portugal to teach English. There she married her now, ex-husband. His name was Jorge Arantes. J.K. had a daughter with him. They got a divorce later that year. She moved to Edinburg, Scotland with her daughter Jessica, to start a new life. With her she also took the first three chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone (Sorcerer's Stone).  J.KRowling got a job as a waitress but struggled a lot to keep herself out of poverty. She was very depressed and in a very dark place. She was working 24/7 and she was still trying to write the first book of Harry Potter. Once she had completed the first book she tried to get it published. The first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times then finally it got published by Bloomsbury. From then on, the Harry Potter books were a huge success.

Significant Accomplishments:

J.K. Rowling became very famous for the books that she wrote. These books jump started her career. The first Harry Potter book was published in 1997 and the last book of the seven-book series was published in 2007. Many of the Harry Potter books have been sold. To be exact, she has sold over 450 million books! The process of writing and publishing these books went on for a decade. Yet, these books are still a big part of many lives. These books have won many awards. A few are:

    Nestlé Smarties Book Prize

1999, 1998, 1997 · Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Book

2008, 2007, 2006, ... · Harry Potter (Literary Series)

Hugo Award for Best Novel

2001 · Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

This famous series of books has now been turned into a movie series for many others to enjoy too.  J.K. Rowling had other accomplishments beside the Harry Potter books. For example, she donated around 160 million pounds to charity. This also includes starting a charity in 2005 called Lumos. Lumos is a spell in Harry Potter which produces light. The light in this case symbolizes hope. This charity helps orphans reunite with their families and get a family.

Impact on the world:

America's imagination is so much different now because of the Harry Potter books. Many kids are much more imaginative because of what they have read and the ideas and feelings the books put forth. Many people felt comforted. The books were a place to escape to. The books have changed the style of children's writing. Many people didn’t want to write fantasy books because they seemed 'old fashioned.' J.K. Rowling changed that when she wrote Harry Potter.

Lessons I Have Learned From Her Life:

J.K. Rowling has said many things that she has learned from her life. While researching, one really stuck out to me. I learned this lesson while listening to her commencement speech. "You might never fail on the scale that I did but some failures in life is inevitable, it is impossible to live without failing at something. Unless you live so cautiously that you might as well have not lived at all in which case you fail by default." She talked about many things in her speech. The main one was failure. How you must fail to be successful. How you must fail to live. How it is normal and how you shouldn’t be afraid because then you can learn. This relates to my life a lot. I am afraid of failing, afraid of not making it to the next step in my life. Now I think that I can make it past this. All because of what she had said, what I had watched.
