Introduction

     Soccer is one of the oldest and the most played sport in the world. Argentina and Brasil are one of the best soccer teams in the world, Argentina is known for their soccer and because of Diego Armando Maradona (soccer legend) and Brasil is know of their amazing soccer and Pelé (soccer legend). Diego Armando Maradona was one of the best soccer players that ever lived. He is also known because of his famous goals, FC Barcelona and for winning the world cup with Argentina in 1986 in Mexico. Edison (Edson) Arantes do Nascimento; his nickname is "The King of soccer”. Pelé and Brasil won three world cups together (1958 in Sweden, 1962 in Chile and in 1970 Mexico).

                                                    Leo Messi

     Lionel Andres Messi (born 24 June 1987 in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina) is an Argentinean soccer player who plays for Spanish La Liga Club FC Barcelona and the Argentina National Team.

     He has drawn comparisons to Diego Armando Maradona; and Maradona himself declared Messi his “successor”.

     He has the skills to take the defenders with ease. He is a left footed player who can play either in the middle or both wing and center forward.

     He is quite short; he is so fast and physically strong. He is in incredibly powerful, and he a specialist on dead ball corners, free kicks and penalties.

They say he is a player who is destined to have a very successful career in soccer.

 

                              Early Career

     At the age of fire, Messi started playing soccer for Grandoli. In 1995 he switched to Newell Boys. At the age of 11 he was diagnosed with growth hormone problem. River Plate showed interest in Messi’s progress but he didn’t have money for his treatment that costed $ 1500 a month. The FC Barcelona’s director was amazed how good Messi was playing soccer. They offered him to pay the medicals bills only if he played and moved to Barcelona, Spain.

  Messi made his unofficial debut for the first team against FC Oporto on 2003 on November 16 when he as 16 years old. Less then a year later he made his official debut on against Espanyol on October the 16th 2004 when he awns 17 years old becoming the third youngest player to ever play for FC Barcelona. When he scored his first senior goal for the club against Albacete Balompie’ on May 2005, Messi was 17 years old, seven months and 6 days.

  The youngest player to ever score in La Liga for the FC Barcelona until 2007 when Bojan Krkíc broke his record.

   2005-06

     On September 16, for the second time in three months, Barcelona announced an update to Messi’s contract and his contract is till 2014.Messi scored six goals in seventeen leagues appearances, and scored in one Champions League six goals. He got injured playing against Chelsea and that year FC Barcelona were the champions.

International Career

     In June 2004, he got his first chance in Argentina colors, playing in an under-20 friendly match against Paraguay. In 2005 he was part of the team that won the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands. Here, he won the prize for best player of the tournament and became top-scorer.

     On 4 August 2005, José Pekerman called Messi up to the senior Argentine national team. He made his debut on 17 August against Hungary at 18 years and 54 days. He was substituted in the minute 63.

                               FIFA World Cup 2006

     He witnessed Argentina's opening match victory against Ivory Coast from the bench. In the next match against Serbia, Messi became the youngest player to represent Argentina at a World Cup when he came on as a substitute for Maxi Rodriguez in the 74th minute.

He made the final goal in a 6-0 victory. Messi started in Argentina’s tie against the Netherlands. In the game against Mexico, Messi came on as a substitute in the 84th with the score 1-1.He scored a goal but the referee called it “offside”.

Argentina finally won in the overtime against Mexico.

Coach Jose Pekerman left Messi on the bench in the quarter finals against Germany.

 

                        

 

                         Copa America 2007

     He was the youngest player in the tournament. He played all the matches and scored at least two or one goals in each match that is how he became the top scorer of the tournament.

Argentina defeated USA 4-1 in the first round then in the second round they defeated Colombia 4-2, in the third round they defeated Paraguay 1-0, in the quarter finals they defeated Peru 5-0 and they got the pass to the semi-finals against Mexico witch they defeated one year ago 2-1 in the Germany FIFA World Cup, but this years it was much closer it was 1-0 for Argentina. Argentina went to the finals and lost against Brasil.

                                             Season 2006-07

       On November 12, in the game Real Zaragoza, Messi suffered a broken metatarsal from tackles, ruling him out for three months.

Messi carried out his recuperation in native Argentina. Messi scored a hat-trick vs. Real Madrid and the result of the game was 3-3.

He is the third person to ever score a hat trick vs. the Real Madrid. Messi didn’t have a great career but he showed that the nickname “Maradona” was the perfect nickname for him. On April 18th 2007, he scored two goals during La Copa del Rey semifinals. One of those was very similar to one of Maradona’s famous goals that he scored against England at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico known as the goal of the century. In Spain they call Messi “Messidona”. He ran about the distance (62m), beat the same amount of players (six including the goalie) and he scored from a similar position. He ran toward the corner flag just as Maradona did in Mexico 21 years before.

A teammate Deco said, “There is no other like Leo”.

Against Espanyol Messi also scored with his hand a goal remarkably similar to Maradona goal in England in the world cup semifinals.

 

                                                                     

                             2007-08

     Messi scored 5 goals in a week leading FC Barcelona to the top four. He dedicated 2 goals to Ronaldinho. He has been nominated for a FIFpro World XI player award under the category of forward.

Football legends think that Messi should get the d’Or (best soccer player).

On 27 February Messi played his 100th official match for FC Barcelona.

 

                   2008 Summer Olympics

     Messi scored the first goal in a 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast in the first round. Then they played against Brasil in second round and they won 3-0.

They were in the finals against Nigeria and Messi gave the pass to Angel di Maria so he could score and Argentina could win the game. They won 1-0 to Nigeria and got the Gold Medal for the second time in a row.( 2004 Athens)

                                                       2008-09

     On 13 December 2008, during his first game vs. the Real Madrid (Barcelona’s competition) of the season he scored the second goal and led the Barcelona to win 2-0 against Real Madrid.

He was named the second 2008 FIFA world cup player of the year award with 678 points behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

He scored his first Hat Trick of 2009 against the Atletico de Madrid.
