                                                                                                                                                 Will Will Book Review

In the book Ark Angel by Anthony Horowitz ,  Alex Rider finds himself in the middle of a once in a lifetime opportunity , to witness the launch of the first commercial hotel in space.  It all started when Alex ended up in the hospital after being shot in the previous book. One night as he was taking a late night walk when he saw some strange men enter the hospital and shoot the man at the front desk and overheard them say that they were here for Paul Drevin, son of Russian billionaire Nikolai Drevin. So Alex, being a spy, did what came natural to him. He switched the room numbers of his and Paul’s and secretly took out the four men in some inhumane methods.  But Alex had not seen a fifth man enter and by that time it was too late. He took Alex prisoner and into an abandoned tower where Alex came face to face with one of the weirdest people he had ever seen. His name is Kaspar and he is covered head to toe in tattoos of the earth. He is also head of an eco-terrorist group that calls themselves Force Three. The reason they captured Pail (Alex) was because they were hoping that in exchange for Paul, Mr. Drevin would stop Ark Angel, which Drevin was in the process of developing because it was killing bird species in Flamingo Bay. But once again, Alex escapes Force Three when they attempt to burn down the tower with him inside. After Mr. Drevin hers what Alex had done, he invited him to stay at his mansion and fly to Flamingo Bay in the Caribbean with them to watch the launch of a rocket headed for Ark Angel. Alex thinks he’s headed to paradise but many surprises await him. In fact, Flamingo Bay is the complete opposite of a paradise. There were many reasons why I liked this book. Horowitz made this book very clear by reminding the readers what had happened in the previous book and included lots of suspense which kept me on the edge of my seat. This book was full of action and surprises. I would recommend this book to anybody between the grades of 6th and 8th and for anyone who likes suspense and action

Voki plugin error       Welcome To My Wiki

Hi my name is Chris and Iam  a 7th grader at MacDonald Middle School. One thing about me is that i love sports. I play soccer, basketball, and soccer, with soccer being my favorite I am a huge sports fan.  My three favorite college teams are Notre Dame, Indiana, and Michigan State.

                                                                           My Place
If I were to go to any place in the U.S right now I would choose Hawaii. There are six exotic islands Kauai, Ohau, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii’s big island to choose from with lots of fun things to do there which is why it attracts so many tourists a year. You can do anything from snorkeling, hiking, swimming in the ocean or touring Hawaii’s many volcanoes.  That is why myself and probably lots of other people around the world would want to travel to this paradise.

                                                Sal’s Place
One of the many places that Sal, the main character in the book Walk Two Moons  goes to is the Black Hills in South Dakota. The Black Hills are home to one of are national monuments Mount Rushmore which is what makes it unique and why so many people go there a year. It has big mountain ranges, prairies and forests and is home to a wide variety of wild life such as bison, mountain lion, and bighorn sheep. It also has the biggest mountain peak in the U.S east of the Rockies. The Black Hills are a truly unique place.

This is your individual wiki page for 7th grade English.  You can delete some or all of these words after you read them and make this page look the way you want it to look.  (You'll still be able to see them on the Template page under the Folders for each hour)

You will, of course, be graded on your wiki at several points this school year.  Your wiki will be graded on the following criteria:

  • that you make your page uniquely yours (25%)

    • this means that you change the font & colors, as well as add other features along the way
  • that you use your time well when we have computer time (25%)

    • this means that you don't talk too much and/or be distracted by your friends when you have time to work
    • this also means that you try your hardest and do your best
  • that you meet the requirements for each individual assignment (50%)

    • these requirements will be explained on each assignment's handout sheet

Here are some other things to keep in mind:

  • you and your parents signed a form saying you will you this wiki responsibly
    • please do not put others down or use profanity (or upload any songs/videos that<script <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://vhss-d.oddcast.com/voki_embed_functions.php"></script><script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">AC_Voki_Embed(200,267,"bb70b76a6563166f35d42661156843b9",2806331, 1, "", 0);</script><BR><a href="http://www.voki.com/"><b>Get a Voki now!</b></a><BR><BR>="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://vhss-d.oddcast.com/voki_embed_functions.php"></script><script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">AC_Voki_Embed(200,267,"bb70b76a6563166f35d42661156843b9",2806331, 1, "", 0);</script><BR><a href="http://www.voki.com/"><b>Get a Voki now!</b></a><BR><BR>use profanity)
  • part of the fun of wikis, and websites in general, is that you can create links to other websites
    • if you include something about Yellowstone National Park in your writing, you can create a link to it
      • find the web address for Yellowstone National Park and copy it (right click, Copy)
      • highlight the word you want to be the link (Yellowstone, for example)
      • on this page (in Edit mode), click on the globe above that says "Insert/Edit Link" if you scroll over it
      • under "Link type" choose URL
      • paste the Yellowstone address in the lower box and click OK
      • click on Save in the lower left corner and then see if it worked
  • here are a couple tips when changing the background color
    • for some reason, pbwiki's editing program doesn't seem to allow a whole page background change (if you figure it out, let me know).  So, you may have to fill in the section in which you want to change the color; you can do this by using the Tab key on your keyboard.  Tab through the area, then highlight it.  Then go up to the Background Color tab (above, left) and change the color to one you like
    • make sure you choose a color isn't too dark; the font color (black, for example) needs to be able to be read over your background color (brown background would make a black font hard to read).
  • here are a couple tips regarding font choice
    • please stay somewhat consistent with your font choice; it's easier to read than... if it changes too often
    • try to make the font size of titles a bit larger; you can use the Format area above and choose a Heading
  • keep your wiki page organized
    • feel free to add a page that's linked to your page if you want; it's a good idea to make a link back to your page
    • if you add photos, include brief captions about what's going on or who is in the photos or why the photo is on your wiki (no last names, please)
    • you can make folders on the Side Bar area; maybe a folder for each of your other three Core areas (Social Studies, Science, and Math) and/or a Hobbies Folder
  • please do not add plugins right away; we will get there at some point.

D-Day: A Day To Remember

history of the U.S. and of the world in general. It was one of the of the most daring military operations is history. It will surely not be forgotten by the people that were there and witnessed it or lived in that time because of the level of violence and suffering that occurred on that bloody day.D-Day was one of the darkest days of World War 2 and U.S. history.

Before D-Day, Western Europe fell under the control of Adolf Hitler and his huge Nazi empire. They were conquering countries at alarming speeds, speeds no one thought was possible. Countries like Austria and most of Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia) fell under the control of Hitler. Once Hitler got to Poland, the British and French had seen enough. They told Hitler that if he invaded Poland there would be war. Hitler ignored this threat and took over Poland: they were now at war. The British and French armies were stationed at the German facing border of France but once Germany launched an invasion through Belgium the two armies were split up. And just like all the other countries before it, France was quickly overwhelmed by the Germans. The Germans tried the same thing in Britain, but failed. They launched a massive air attack and Britain answered back with equal force. Houses were camouflaged and lights were turned off so the bombers could not see them. Children were also moved to the countryside to avoid harm from the bombers. Once Hitler realized the invasion had failed he withdrew his troops and invaded the Soviet Union.

Japan, an ally of Germany got involved too. On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese bombed the U.S. military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The next day the U.S declared war on Japan, and on doing that, declared war on Germany. Young men started to join the armed forces while women volunteered for supporting roles. Children also played a part in the war efforts. They were taught  how to recycle and reuse materials for the war and there were optional high school courses that offered gun safety. Then in 1942, the U.S. sent thousands and thousands of tons of supplies and troops to England ready to fight.

By the time U.S. troops got to England, fighting was raging all over Europe. The Soviet Union, and ally of the U.S., was being invaded by Germany. The leader of the Soviets, Joseph Stalin, demanded that we invade through the east why they were fighting in the west. They decided that they would invade through France to get to Germany. President Roosevelt appointed General Dwight D. Eisenhower in command of the invasion on December 7th, 1943. If the invasion was successful, he would be the first man to invade mainland Europe from across the English Chanel. The first step of the plan was to decide where they would begin the invasion. But one giant obstacle sat in their way. Hitler had built a wall called the Atlantic Wall that stretched for 3,500 miles. The Allies thought long and hard about what to do and decided that the weakest point was in Calais, France. Hitler suspected this and strengthened his defenses there. But by doing this he would have to leave other spots open. In the end he had to spread out his forces evenly.

Hitler stationed Field Marshall Rommel at Calais. He was in charge of strengthening the walls defenses. He ordered land mines to be placed all along the beach and in the water and  built huge gun emplacements. All of this improved the defenses greatly but Rommel was still not satisfied. He wanted the German tanks closer to the beach to provide emergency support but the higher ranking officers would not permit it. Even though Hitler thought he was one step ahead of Eisenhower, he was actually one step behind. Eisenhower knew that Hitler suspected him to attack at Calais, the Chanel's narrowest point so he decided to attack at it’s widest point, the beaches of Normandy, France. Normandy was the perfect location for an attack. The part of the Atlantic Wall was not heavily fortified, good sandy beaches for the troops to land on, and it was far away enough from German reserve troops that by the time they got there it would already be too late. Also the Allies placed General George S. Patton at Calais because he was believed to be their best general, placing him there made it seem like that would be the place where the invasion would take place. The only bad part of Normandy was that it had no deep water ports for the Allies to resupply their troops once the beaches were taken. They would have to wait a while for additional supplies.

The Allies also had many deceiving tricks up their sleeves. They placed rubber tanks all over the French countryside making it seem like they had many more troops then they really did. When the German planes took pictures of the tanks from above, it looked as though the tanks were real. To make the tanks seem even more realistic they placed loud speakers hidden all over that projected loud noises that sounded like the distant rumble of tanks or other vehicles. Fake Allies camps were also set up with armed guards making them look inhabited even though there were very few troops in the them if even any. The German troops that were positioned in the different French towns thought there were tons of Allies troops hidden in the countryside. Once the plan had begun, the Allies began dropping bombs all over Normandy and the surrounding areas. But to avoid drawing attention to Normandy every time they dropped one bomb in Normandy, two were dropped in a different location so that the Germans would not be suspicious. To make sure that German reinforcements could not come to the aid of the troops at Normandy the Allies bombed all roads, railroads, and bridges leading to Normandy.

The Germans were determined to find out the Allies plan and where they were attacking. They sent many spies in to England. The Allies were extremely cautious about keeping the plan a secret and if someone even hinted about the plan they would be punished. Almost all of the German spies that were sent in ended up being captured and turned into  double agents. These agents gave the Germans false information like the location where the invasion would take place or how many troop divisions they would be sending in. The Germans thought that all this information was true and were over joyed. A few agents hidden out deep in England and Scotland convinced them that the Allies were planning an invasion of Norway by ordering tons of snow gear like skis and heavy coats. One of the agents, who the Germans thought was their best spy, actually told the Germans that they were invading at Normandy! He actually told them the real time and location of the invasion. But he also gave them false information by saying that the attack at Normandy was just a cover up for the real invasion which would take place at Calais, where the Germans suspected they would attack the whole time. The trusted German spy has suddenly become one of the best Allies double agents. By 1944 the Allies were strong enough to launch the invasion.

The weather could not have been better for the invasion. There were clear skies, the sun was shining, and there was very little wind. But once the invasion force got closer to France, the weather changed dramatically. The sunny and warm weather changed into wind and rain and four foot waves battered the beach. All the troops became miserable. The ones of the boats became sea sick and the waves made the ships hard to control. Airborne troops were also effected by the bad weather. Eisenhower ordered the ships to turn around back to England and post pone the attack another day which meant the invasion would begin on June 6th.

The biggest factor in the invasion of Normandy was the support from aircraft and their ships. The Allies launched over 13,000 planes on the day of the invasion! These planes dropped paratroopers into France and were the first troops to take part in the invasion. They were dropped in the early hours of the morning a few days before the invasion started. Bombers also made bomb runs targeting important German positions. They also had an equally large number of ships for the invasion. They had over 4,000 transport ships that brought  troops ashore, 800 warships that provided support to the troops on the beach by taking out German gun positions, and a very large amount of various other ships. The Allies also came up with a very smart solution to the lack of deep water ports at Normandy. They spent months building giant floating ports! These ports were kept afloat by giant buoys and could be pulled behind boats. Once the beaches were taken they would be placed close to the beach so the soldiers could get new supplies and refuel.

On June 6th, 1944, the Allies invaded France. The airborne troops were the first troops to land in France during Operation Overlord on the east and west flanks of the beaches in the early hours of the morning. They were followed in by the troops landing on the beaches. From the moment they set foot on the beaches, they encountered heavy German resistance and sustained many causalities. The U.S. forces landed on two beaches, Omaha and Utah while the combined British-Canadian forces landed on three beaches Juno, Gold, and Sword. Once the first waves of troops gained a foothold on the beach, U.S. Rangers scaled the large cliffs that lined the beaches at Normandy and took out gun positions that already took out a lot of men and would cause even further harm to more troops if not taken out.

Once the beachheads were taken and the Germans pushed back, thanks to  successful flanking movements of the airborne troops that landed a few days earlier, the British, Canadian, and U.S. forces moved inland into what is known as Hedgerow Country. The Germans launched fierce counter attacks on the now Allied controlled beaches and the troops moving inland, they especially concentrated their forces on the Canadian and British sections. The German military had under estimated the Allies invasion plan and  where overwhelmed. Many officers turned themselves in or surrendered or some even committed suicide because they feared being captured. On July 25th, the Allies launched Operation Cobra. It started out with a massive air attack to clear out enemy forces in the way between the Allies troops in Normandy and the Surrounding areas. Once there was a hole in the German defense the U.S sped forward with enormous speed to surround Normandy from the rear. Once again the Germans tried to launched counter attacks and again failed. But this time it was because the Allies had learned of the Germans plans before and had set up anti-tanks defenses and stopped the German advance. The country that was benefiting the most from the invasion was the U.S. The Germans had sent a majority of their forces to deal with the Canadian-British forces leaving a fairly easy job for the U.S. They did not have to deal with practically any German armor wither because they sent most of it away in an attempt to take back Allied controlled towns like Cherbourg and Contentin Peninsula. And when there was an attempt from the Germans to stop them they were soon defeated because they did not have enough troops or supplies to keep up with the U.S. troops.

Finally, over the next few weeks, the German defenses at Normandy crumbled. The Allies took Normandy and soon moved into Paris, and accomplished their goal of liberating France from German control. They continued to move East, liberating country after country pushing the Germans back and ridding Europe of Nazi control. On May 8th, 1945, The Soviets moved into Berlin and defeated the Germans. Europe would suffer the wrath of Hitler no longer.
