                                                               Jan.16, 2013              Final Reflection

So far this year in English has been interesting. I learned a lot. I learned about personal essay. It was very easy writing a personal essay, mainly because it could be about anything that has happened to you. We also got a lot of time to work on it. So I finished a lot of it in class.

We also wrote a persuasive essay. I thought writing this was easy too, because I’ve written one before. I liked that we were able to write about whatever we wanted. I thought doing this essay was fun. Since we did a lot of research on this assignment, I learned a lot about the topic I was doing. I think we had a lot of time in class to do it, and I didn’t even have to work out of school.

This year we also had to do a public service announcement. We could do it with a partner if we wanted to. That was my first time doing a public service announcement, so I learned how to do one. This was my favorite project that we’ve done so far this year. I liked the fact that we got to work with partners and make it about whatever we wanted. We had a lot of in class work time, so I finished most of mine in class.

Lastly we wrote a poem. The poem could be a Haiku, or whatever you wanted. I liked this project because I like writing poems. I also liked that we got to share our poems while we ate donuts and drank soda.

So far this year we have had a few assignments, and had a lot of time to work on them in class, which makes it a lot easier, and lets you finish faster. One thing that I don’t like about this year, is posting things on the wiki. I would rather just print it and hand it in.

                          Poems                        Jan.16, 2012

Alone:

I sit

I cry

A tear falls from my eye

Alone will I die?

There’s no one around

I don’t hear a sound

All my family has died

I sit

I cry

A tear falls from my eye

Alone will I die?

Beautiful”

To be beautiful

What does that mean?

Will they love you because of the outside, or the inside?

To be beautiful what does that mean

To use makeup, to cover up your imperfections

To be beautiful

What does that mean?

               Personal Narrative

It was a cool autumn day, the wind was rustling the leaves. I looked at the huge horse in front of me. I had to raise my head to get a full view of the horse. I placed my dirt stained boot on the stirrup, struggling I pulled myself up on to the horse. I looked down a the ground, which appeared to be miles away.
I looked at all of the obstacles that lay ahead of me. My goal was to win the best rider award, to do that you had to perform in the horse show and do what the counselors thought  to be a good job. The people organizing the show explained instructions and rules, while I daydreamed about winning the award.
I looked at the other riders behind me that kept a fake smile on their faces, which was instructed by the counselors. We all tried our best to keep perfect posture, in my mind I ran through the dos and dont's of obese riding, don't tug to hard on the reins was the rule that continued to race through my mind.
Suddenly a man started counting down from three. I looked straight ahead... GO! My horse started galloping slowly towards the first girdle, I gently tugged the reins on the horse, one leg lifted after another and in a heartbeat we were over the hurdle. I rode around the ring and stopped at the point, that I had started on. Everyone that was behind me made it over the hurdle too, and the audience applauded.
Now we had to go around again, but this time the hurdle was somewhat higher, I was the first in line so I had to guide everyone that was behind me. My horse and I slowly approached the hurdle, I was sure i would miss it, but gladly I didn't, again I stopped at the point I had stared at, and watched the other riders make it over the hurdle.
I started staring off into space and all of sudden I heard a horses cry! I immediately turned my head towards the noise, and I saw a horse and its rider lay on the hard ground, I saw the girls face turn a bright shade of red and tears slowly falling down her cheeks. I felt for her, she was Hirt and probably embarrassed they took the girl and the horse to the infirmary
Due to the accident, they ended the show right then and there. W all rode back into the stables and sat awaiting what would happen next. After about 15 minutes They called us all out there. We rode our horses onto the mud ring. Now it was time for the awards. The announcer mentioned several people and what awards they had won. I saw disappointed faces, while other people rode off with the award that they had wanted. And finally it was time for best rider of the whole session. I sat there with my fingers crossed, hoping I had won. The winner was ME! I was surprised and I rode up to the announcer, she handed me my award, and I tried my best to contain my happiness I had finally won the award that I had been anticipating for years!

                      This I believe Essay

I believe in gay marriage. I believe that everyone has the right to love or marry who ever they want. If a boy and a girl can get married, then why can't a boy and a boy, or a girl and a girl. Why does everyone have to see it as something unnatural or gross? Just because it's different from what we are all used to, doesn't mean it's weird. Why should we tell other people who they can and can't love? It sad to know that even in the 21st century gay people are still not aloud to get married in all 50 states of the U.S. a few states have given the right and freedom to marry who ever you want. Now, in the year 2012 only  Connecticut, Iowa, Main, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and Washington have legalized gay marriage. That is only 9 states. 9 states out of 50. Hopefully one day in the near future all 50 States of the U.S will have legalized gay marriage. One day people will e able to love anyone they please. One day.

                  Persuasive Essay

              Persuasive essay

I think that people should stop smoking. Smoking is hazardous to your health and to the environment. Smoking also costs a lot of money, and affects those around you as well.

The main reason that you shouldn’t smoke is how it affects your health. Smoking makes it difficult to perform in sports. In sports there is a lot of exercise and running around. But when you have tobacco in your lungs it is harder to do all these things. Smoking also can cause lung cancer and emphysema. And it shortens your life.

Another reason would be because of those around you. Smoking doesn’t only affect you; it affects those near you too. When you smoke all the toxic things that you are inhaling are also being inhaled by the people around you.

And the final reason that you  should stop smoking is because of the affect it has on your wallet. Your basic pack of cigarettes costs $4. So if you smoke a pack a day for a whole year, you will have spent nearly $1500! You could pay a months rent with  that, or buy 3 ipads!!!!!!!!!! Next time you want to smoke, remember the money, how other people are affected, and your own health.

        Don’t smoke kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                                      The Dome

Dear Diary,

I sat at the end of my bed and stared out the window. I looked far off in to the distance and I could see where the “world” curved. Or at least what I called a world. As it was the only world, or life I’ve ever known. But this sudden curve in the sky wasn’t the world. It was the dome.

A humongous sphere that only a few thousands of people inhabit. A sphere that we were prohibited to go outside of.

I feel trapped. I’ve always felt trapped, but everyone else seems to be okay with this strange way of life. But I’m not.

I want to fight for my freedom, go beyond this dome, and see what else the world has to offer.

I know that this place isn’t the whole world. Or at least I hope not. I’ve heard tales of other fantastic places. But I don’t know if those are fact or fiction. I’ll try my best to find out.

If you tried to guess the name of this place, you would never get it right. Because the name is the exact opposite of what this place really is. They call this place “paradise” I name that I’ve always dreaded.

All the kids have a curphew of 7 o’clock. And when I say kids I mean 17 and under. By 7 o’clock they turn the city’s lights off manually. Due to the fact that we live in a huge dome that gets absolutely no sun light. The lights stay on for exactly 12 hours. Form 7 am to 7pm. But sometimes they forget and it’s still dark by 9 am.

This life may seem strange to you, but I’ve grown accustom to it. But just because I’m used to it, doesn’t mean I’m okay with it. I don’t understand why we must be separated from the rest of society, but that’s just the way it is. But most of the time I feel alone with the way I view this place.

Everyone else seems to be oblivious to the fact that this isn’t normal.

The lights are about to turn off so I have to go. But I’ll talk to you soon diary.

  ************************************** 6 months later

             Dear Diary,

Today the dome was opened. The door that leads out of here just opened out of nowhere. My friends and I were playing around the door and caught a glimpse of natural light. We were hesitant to leave at first. We gently put our foot out on to the bright green grass on the other side of the heavy door, just to see if it was a joke or not. But it wasn’t. So we ran outside. The sun felt so unfamiliar on my skin, and in my eyes.

We saw several cars driving by and asked someone for help.

      Finally we were free!

                                                    The four Brothers
A long time who there were four brothers. They were all very close. But after a while their close bond was broken.

The four Brothers shared a stone. The stone was the most powerful thing to exist. Since the brothers didn't even talk t to each other anymore, they had to find a way to divide to the stone. So they broke it into four pieces. Each piece possessing it's own power.

One of the brothers, Actaeon, grew lonely and empty. The only way to fill this emptiness was to create people. He made a man and a woman (so that the population would continue to grow). Their names were Adamia and eveith. But there was a problem in Actaeon's plans. human beings cold not survive on their planet. So he would have to create a new. Which he found to be impossible. He needed at least 3/4 of the stone to gain enough power to create a whole mew planet. His two other brothers Alecto and Amor liked his idea of making a new planet and decided to help him. The three brothers put their stones together, gained enough power, and created earthia.

The fourth brother, Avernus, was jealous because all his brothers left him out of the plan to make earthia. Avernus plotted revenge on his brothers. He had the perfect plan, but it required a lot of power. It would take him about 4 billion years to get all this power.

After training for 4 billion year Avernus finally had enough power to get revenge. So one day, on December 21, 2012 Avernus went to what was now called earth in a disguise. He looked like a human. With all his power he did the one thing he had wanted to do for billions of years. He destroyed his brothers' creation, their happiness. Avernus destroyed earth. Killing every single person. His brothers were devastated. Avernus then retreated to the underworld, and left his brothers broken.

This is a poem. it is beautiful. so watch it.

            The House on the Gulf

                                                    Book Review

In this story there is a family, the Lassiters. which include a mom, her daughter Britt and her son Bran. The family is quite poor. They can barely afford the small apartment they live in. Since Mr. Lassiter left, Bran has always been the male figure in the house, and tries his best to support his family. Over the summer Bran gets a job cutting his rich neighbor's grass. The neighbors, the Marcus's are going away to Florida for the summer and have allowed Bran and his family to stay at their mansion. But during their stay at the Marcus's, Bran starts acing weird. He's very jumpy and it seems like he's hiding something. Britt notice Bran's strange behavior. But does she really want to know what her brother is hiding.

I would recommend this book. I would recommend it to people who like mystery and suspenseful books. It was really interesting.

Which Witch is Which
The Salem witch trials consisted of several hearings and killings of those who were accused of witchcraft. They were some of the most controversial events in the American history. Men, women, and people of all kinds were accused of the crime. At the time most of the people believed in witchcraft, but afterwards a lot of people felt guilty for wrongly convicting others.

The Salem witch trials occurred in Massachusetts between February of 1692 and ay of 1693. Around this time, several people believed that the devil could give certain people powers, to harm other people. The puritans believed that God allowed satan to tempt and torment the people that weren't as religious. There was a lot of controversy over Salem’s first minister: Reverend Samuel Parris. He was disliked because he was very strict and greedy. The puritans believed that this was the work of the devil. But in January 1692 reverend Paris' daughter Elizabeth, who was nine at the time and his niece Abigail Williams, who was 11, started acted strangely. They screamed, threw things, made weird sounds, and placed themselves on strange positions. Doctors blamed the supernatural. On February 29 the girls blamed three women for making them act that way: Sarah good (a homeless women), Tituba (the parris' slave from the Caribbean), and Sarah Osborn (an elderly, poor woman). In the end all three were convicted and put in jail.

Witches got their powers in several ways. They could sell their soul to the devil for magical powers. And they could do several things with these powers. Like making love potions for people. But they also did bad things. Such as poisoning people or animals, or destroying the crops. The powers that the witches possessed caused seizers among children, loud screaming and trances.  Some young girls would bark like dogs and dance strangely in the woods. The townspeople believed the children didn’t bring these powers upon themselves, but that a witch put the children under a spell, and that was the cause for their strange behavior.

After the conviction of the three Witches, there was a lot of fear amongst the people. Therefore several more accusations followed. If you were accused of being a witch, you had a few options
1) Flee Salem
2) Confess (even if you're innocent)
3) Accuse somebody else
4) Get pregnant
5) Say you're innocent and stand for trial
6) Don't stand for trial, but face the consequences
If you choose to flea the city, you may not be that successful. Several witches tried to escape and survived, but they all had money, which made
their escape much easier.
If you confessed that might just save your life. Witches that confessed weren't executed. Instead they were separated from the other prisoners awaiting the trial. The puritans believed that once a person confessed to being a witch, their fate was in God's hands. Accusing somebody else seems like a good idea. The theory was that if you've been hurt by witchcraft, you can't be a witch. And some daughters pointed the finger at their mothers and said it was them instead. But this didn't always work. Getting pregnant, even though it sounds insane was actually a very good idea. If pregnant woman were convicted of witchcraft they would not be executed. They believed that it wasn't fair to kill the baby inside when they had done nothing wrong, but after you gave birth, you could still be executed. If you said you were innocent, you would have a trial without a lawyer or anyone witnesses on your side. In front of a court that believed in witchcraft and believed that you were guilty. It's very unlikely that you would be found innocent. For example, a nurse named Rebecca: the jury found her innocent, but the court told them to go back and reevaluate the case. In the end found her guilty.
If you refused to stand for trial then a pile of heave stones would be placed in top of you, until you either agree to go to trial or are crushed to death.

In the end of it all 185 people were accused of being witches in Salem, 141 of them were women and 44 of them were men 52 women and 7 men were tried, 26 women and 5 men were convicted; and 14 women and 5 men were executed. The trials finally ended in September of 1693 when the governor of the colony’s wife was accused of being a witch. The Salem witch trials can be seen from many different perspectives. Some believe that the way some of the people acted was due to disease or disability. While others believe it's more than that, deeper than that, others think of it more on a spiritual level, that the trials had to do with witchcraft and wizardry. But that’s for you to decide.

The Giver
I looked around and I was in a very unfamiliar place. Gabe was still sat in the seat at the back of my bike.all the roads seemed old and worn down. Potholes scattered the roads and few cars traveled on the bumpy path. I saw several people sitting on the edge of the road, with something in their mouths that produced smoke. And the others that walked appeared to be poor. They wore clothes 2 sizes too brigand their shoes clung tightly to their feet, barely holding on.

The buildings seemed old too. Most had shattered windows and barbed wire fences surrounding it. "Where am I" I thought to myself. I turned around in my seat just to make sure Gabe was still there. He was sound asleep. I heard his shallow breathing and watched as his chest rose with every breath. He's so cute!

I watched a group of men, again with clothes two sizes too big. Many of them wore hats and their pants were practically touching the ground. The could definitely use a belt. They were shouting back and forth, they seemed very angry. But they paid no attention to us, it was as if we weren't there. And I was content with the fact that we were content to these strange looking men.

I was afraid. Mainly because these men were different, they were unfamiliar. And unfamiliarity scared me. The thing about these men that was so different was their skin. Their skin colour was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. It looked very similar to the color of milk chocolate. It was only then I realized there may be even more skin colors. Maybe this brown color wasn't the only one. One of the 'different' men came up to us. He motioned with his hands for us to follow him. I was probably a bad idea for us to follow a man we knew nothing about, but for some reason we did. I took my bike with me followed the man.

"Wher-"I started to say but was cut off when the man placed his index finger on the center if his lips and said "shhhh". I closed my mouth tightly, and continued to follow him, trying best to keep quiet. We walked a little ways till we finally came up to an alley.

The man stopped walking and turned to me. I kicked the kick stand on my bike and it tilted a to the left, but stayed up. The man then looked over at Gabe, his facial expression told me that he was genuinely concerned for Gabe's well being. He then leaned up against the wall, and looked down.

"Umm. Why did u bring us here?" I asked breaking the slightly awkward silence.
"Because it wasn't safe there" he replied shrugging. His voice sas deep and raspy. And his accent was also unfamiliar to me. How was it not safe wondered. But decided to just leave it as a thought and not ask.

"We'll just stay here for a little bit longer, till its safe" he said. Not looking at me this time. I walked a little closer t the man and asked " what's your name?" He looked up at me. He appeared to be slightly shocked. As if it was strange that I was curious as to what his name was. It seemed as if he was contemplating whether to tell me or not.

"Austin" he replied after a while. Not bothering to ask me what my name was. I did as Austin had done earlier and leaned against the wall and kicked a stone around. After doing that for a few minutes, I finally got bored. I walked back over to my bike, where I had left Gabe. But the seat was empty. Gabe was gone.

"Where's My brother?!" I yelled. Austin looked up with his eyes wide. And he ran over to me. "I have no idea!" He replied, evidently just as confused as I was. As we were about to go around and look for Gabe, a random man stood at the end of the alley. He also had milk chocolate skin, but it was slightly darker than Austin's. But the man was holding Gabe. Relief filled my body. And it realized I hadn't been breathing. So I let out my breath.

I tried to walk over to the man to retrieve Gabe. But He was holding something. The black bet in his hand was pointed right at me. I recalled this object from one of the memories the giver had shared with me. One of the most scarring memories. The object was used in the war, and caused so many fatalities. Then I heard a click, and a boom. Then all I saw was darkness.

Final Reflection

So far this school year has been fun. Learning in your class has been very interesting. I learned a lot through out the year. I loved doing poetry because I think we had the most freedom with that topic. With everything else we've had some limitations but with poetry you let us do whatever we wanted and I thought that was cool. And we could write as many poems as we wanted and share them with the class and I really liked that. I also liked the research paper. I wish we had a little more freedom with it though. You only gave us certain options which I didn't really like. I mean I guessing understand that you wanted to narrow it down, but I wish we could've just done it on whatever we wanted. But the school year was a lot of fun. I really liked the nature walks we went on as well. Because we didn't have to learn and they were just fun. Thanks for the fun year Mr. Kabodian.
