Reflection

This year I enjoyed English. I liked most of the essays we did. I liked the research essays especially the one I did on anorexia because it really interests me. I think we had a fair time to work on it. I liked that you corrected our rough draft and gave us feedback on things we should change or correct.  I liked working on a wiki but I think we should have an option to work on it or write and turn it in the basket. I liked using Google docs a lot. I learned a lot of terms for English this year. I learned a lot in all of my classes.  Strategies that I have learned best with are practicing a lot. I stayed pretty organized this year. I have a folder for each class and that helped a lot. I learned that it’s my responsibilities to do my homework, study, and work in class. I know i need to respect my teachers or any adult.

Anorexia

The word anorexia means “without appetite”. The most common effect of anorexia is extreme weight loss. There are many causes of anorexia.

Anorexia is an eating disorder. It can happen to everyone but usually occurs in adolescent females. It is characterized by refusal to maintain a normal body weight, fear of gaining weight, loss of appetite, and inability to eat. The two subtypes include one by dieting and exercising alone and one by binge eating and purging.

The exact cause of anorexia is unknown. Doctors say many things can cause it. Not wanting to grow into adults can cause anorexia. Some want to gain attention and want a sense of being special if they feel neglected. Stress can also cause it. It could be genetics. It's more likely for you to have an eating disorder if someone in your family has or have had an eating disorder. Perfectionism along with low self confidence can cause it. Social pressure like wanting to fit in is a major cause. Moving, divorce, and death of a loved one can trigger anorexia.

Anorexia or any eating disorder can majorly affect your daily life. You can lose up to 25% of your body fat, can have low blood pressure, slow heart beat, growth of fine or thinning hair, teeth decay, organ damage (heart and blood problems, low red blood cells or abnormal red blood cells, low blood pressure, kidney stones, kidney failure, stomach shrinks, bloating, constant hunger), excessive weight loss, dry skin, frail appearance, headaches, and possible fainting.

This not only affects you, but your family too. It can cause much worry in your family. The person with the disorders' opinion on the family might change negatively. They could resent the family. There will be anger on both sides. Sadness and shame will play a major part I'm feelings. It can tear a family apart.

Eating disorders also affect your future. Treatment may last years. A vast majority of people with anorexia will enter a recovery phase, but there will always be a lifelong struggle with food. Many people die from heart failure or suicide because of anorexia.

Anorexia can really hurt you mentally too. Most victims isolate themselves from family and friends. They withdraw from social activities especially those that include eating.  Anorexia can start from depression or can cause depression. Self destructive behaviors such as cutting themselves, self harm, and burning themselves to cope with emotions is common. Anxiety is also common. They will probably have low self esteem and feel worthless.

Anorexia is a very deadly disease. Anorexia is the 3rd most common chronic illness among adolescents. 95% of people with eating disorders are between the ages 12 and 25. 5-10% of anorexics within 10 years of the disease. 18-20% will die after 20 years and 30-40% never even fully recover. The mortality rate associated with anorexia is 12 times higher than the death rate of all causes of death in females between the ages 15-24 years old. 20% of anorexics die due to complications related to eating disorders such as suicide or heart problems. Half of all Americans know someone with an eating disorder. 8 million americans have an eating disorder. 10-15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are males (7 million women 1 million men). 1 in 200 American women suffer from anorexia. 2-3 in 100 American women suffer from bulimia. 1 in 10 people receive treatment. Treatment for eating disorder in the US range from $500 per day to $2000 per day. The average cost for a month of treatment is $30,000 and people usually need 3-6 months of treatment. Health care companies for several reasons, typically do not cover the cost for treating eating disorders.

If you or a loved one has anorexia, contact a responsible adult. Anorexia is a serious disease that is very deadly.

the giver

In the book The Giver, I think the most important lessons are freedom, making mistakes, and the importance of feelings. I think they taught these well.

I think freedom was very important because without freedom, you won't know what’s out in the world. Jonas didn't have freedom but at the end of the book he did. He went where he wasn't allowed to go and explored new things and he was amazed at these new things. If we don't have freedom how can we discover new things? How would we know what we like and don't like?

I also think making mistakes is also very important. The only way to learn is by making mistakes. In the book, Jonas never made a mistake because he didn't really know how to. He was always taught things one way and would be punished if he did something wrong. It’s important to make mistakes because if you don't, we wouldn't know the best or right way to do things.

Lastly, I think feelings are very important. If we didn't have feelings, life would be so boring. Some people wonder why we have pain and what the point of it is. I think we have bad feelings, like pain, because without it how would we know happiness and joy and all the good feelings that we get to experience? I wouldn't want to be like the people in the giver and not be able to feel pain because they can't feel happiness either. I’d rather feel them both then nothing at all.

Because of these reasons, I think the most important lessons in this book are freedom, making mistakes, and the importance of feelings.

2 stories

In this essay, I will be comparing the stories After Twenty Years, and Retrieved Reformation. I will also be contrasting them.

After Twenty Years (ATY) and Retrieved Reformation (RR) are similar because they both have criminal activity in it. In ATY his friend was a criminal and in RR the man broke into safes. The both also have a twist ending because in ATY the cop his friend ends up being a criminal and in RR the cop lets him go even though he knows he has a criminal past.

The two stories are different because they take place in different states. ATY takes place in New York City and RR takes RR takes place in Arkansas. Also, the  criminal in the story ATY started good and became bad at the end of the story and in RR the criminal is bad in the beginning of the story but ends up being good at the end.

So as you have realize, these two stories are very similar because they both have criminal activity and they both have a twist ending. The are different because they take place in different states and the criminals change differently through the stories.

UGLIES

The book uglies is a novel that takes place in a

high-tech future. The main character is Tally. She is turning 16 and is very excited to turn pretty because when you turn 16 they do an operation on you to make you pretty. they invented this so avoid people being mean to others because of their looks. But Tally's new friend Shay, isn't sure she wants to be pretty. All the pretties look the same to her and she wants to be different. When Shay runs away the night before the operation, Tally learns a whole new part of the pretties she never thought she'd have to see. The authorities make her choose: turn Shay in, or never turn pretty. What choice will she make?

The Year 2050

it is the year 2050. school is very different compared to what it was around 2010. they used to have people as teachers! i wonder what that was like. today we have robots for teachers. I'm not sure if I like them. I think it would be very interesting to have a separate teacher for each subject. And you can go to school and see all your friends! Today we have school in our own homes. I wish I could see my friends every day! That would be so much fun! The robots are programmed so they know how we learn the best but I think if I had a human teacher I could learn better.

We also have flying cars here. They were invented in 2032. they look like any kind of car that drives on the ground except they fly! And pur computers act like humans. They can respond to your voice and they know who what what the person is telling them.
i don't know if i like all these inventions. i've tried telling people that we shouldn’t depend on them so much but no one listens to me because i’m just a child. thats what they always tell me but i just hope that one day that all the electronic stuff doesn't all crash. some people are so dependent on computers and robots and all the other electronic stuff, that they wouldn't know how to live if every thing crashed. Nobody knows how to cook because all our food has been made for us by robots and machines.

personal essay

I've played volleyball since 4th grade and I've always struggled with my serves. I have worked and worked on them for a long time but I could never figure out what I was doing wrong. Every year I got a little better but I could never get them over every single time.

I worked hard and practiced all the time, and in  the end of 5th grade I realized I wasn’t hitting the the ball hard enough and I wasn't aiming very well. After I figured out that I needed to use more power, all I had to do was work on my aim. I practiced that, and I still do sometimes.

Now, I can get all my serves over. I remember how happy I was when I first made all of my serves over the net! I felt so proud of myself. This year i'm working on making them perfect.

Persuasive Essay

I strongly believe that there should be no banned books. My reasons are that we all read at different reading levels, some people are more mature than others, and I think we should be able to explore all the other books that have been written. This is why I think there should be no banned books.

First, we all read at different levels. Some people can read books about any kind of topic and not be offended. Others, however read books that involve witches or topics related to that, and they get offended because they believe they should not write books about witches because it could scare kids.

My second reason is that some people can read a book that swears in it and not be bothered. Others read books that swear and say that it is a bad influence on kids, so even if a book swears, I don't think it should be banned.

My third and last reason is that people should be allowed to let our minds explore. There are so many books in the world so I think we should be able to try all different types of books. We won't know what kind of books we like best unless we try them all!

So, because of all my reasons, I think we should be able to read any book we want. If we don't read different types of books, we might not figure out what our favorite book is.

This I Believe

I believe in family. I think I need a family to teach me what is right and what is wrong. I need a family to love me. Also, to give me food, shelter, clothes and anything else i need to live.

I believe I need a family to teach you right from wrong. They help  me grow up and learn. Since i have 2 older sisters, they give me experience.

I believe I need a family to love me and to have fun with. every year on thanksgiving, all my uncles and boy cousins go to patriarch park and play football with all the boys in the watters family. It’s a tradition that we do every year and it is always so fun.

I believe I need a family to give me food, shelter, clothes, and anything else I need. My family always gives me the things i need.

These are my reasons that i believe I need a family. I need a family to help me with everything. Because of my reasons, I think families are very important.

final reflection

so far i like English class this year. i liked writing the "this i believe". i liked writing the poems but i don't like presenting in front of people so i enjoy it more when we can just turn it in. i thought the PSA was fun because it was different. I've never made anything like that. the personal and persuasive essays were both good. i think we had a good amount of time to work on them.

the notebook writing was also fun. i liked when we did free write because you could just write about anything you are feeling.
