Holes is a book about a kid named Stanley Yelnats (the fourth generation) and how he is cursed by his great-great-grandfather. This curse carried out through the family generations for years. This curse was put on the family by the woman named Madame Zeroni. Elya Yelnats had fallen in love with a girl named Myra Menke, this girl's father tells her that she had to pick between the boy with a bigger pig to marry her.
To make the pig fatter he would have to carry the pig to the top of a hill to drink water, if he didn't carry her to the top after he was done she would curse his family. He got stronger and stronger until they picked the right husband. Myra Menke picked the other man. Devastated, Elya had left for america on a ship instead of carrying Madame Zeroni to the top of the hill. She cursed his family there and then on. The family was fine until Elya's son got robbed by Kissin' Kate Barlow. From then on, the family had bad luck.
Stanley Yelnats was walking home from school and some special shoes come "from the sky" and hit him. The cops were out looking for them and they found him guilty for stealing them. He was sent to a camp called "camp green lake" where they had to dig holes every day for punishment. Stanley became suspicious about why they were doing this. Throughout the days he stayed there they dug holes and he found a metal cylinder in the hole he was digging that was engraved KB, the warden searches for more clues. Could it be Kissin' Kate Barlow? The person who robbed his great-grandfather's money? The book goes across various generations of people. One of the generations is about Kate Barlow and how she became an outlaw, and what her storyline is. One of the kids at the camp is named Hector Zeroni, related to Madame Zeroni who had cursed his family. Could he be the one to somehow turn back the curse? The whole book was very good and makes you think about three timezones at the same time and overall a very very good book.
