I read a book called Artichoke’s Heart by Suzanne Supplee. This book had 276 pages. This book is about a girl named Rosemary Goode who is struggling with being over weight. Her mom owns the most successful beauty shop in their town so it’s hard to keep a low profile. Her Aunt Mary has been trying to get her to exercise and lose weight buy by buying her exercise stuff. Her mom gave her a treadmill for Christmas and Rosemary has not even turned it on. Rosemary has always been bullied by Misty Winters because of her weight. In one of her classes she meets a new guy named Kyle Cox. Rosemary thinks he is dreamy and would never even look at her beaucse she is fat. Then one day she is befriended by Kay-Kay Reese who is pretty, skinny, nice, and use to be friends with Misty. Rosemary can’t believe that someone like Kay-Kay would want to be friends with her. Slowly Kay-Kay and Rosemary develop a good friendship. Meanwhile Rosemary is really trying to lose weight to impress Kyle but it is a struggle. Eventually Rosemary gets on the treadmill… but that’s all that she does at first. It isn’t even plugged in. At school Misty is bullying Kay-Kay too for being friends with Rosemary. Kyle is really nice to Rosemary and she doesn’t think anything of it. Overtime Rosemary and Kyle become friends and her feelings for him become stronger. Rosemary then starts seeing weird things about her mother’s appearance and her energy level. While battling Misty, trying to lose weight, fighting with her Aunt Mary, dealing with the feelings for Kyle, Rosemary gets some new that shakes up her world.
I liked this book because it shows that you if you really put your mind to something you can change. Also it gives the message that appearances aren’t everything. Another reason I liked this book was because it is dramatic in some parts and that makes the book exciting. Also I like that there’s a love interest in this book and while other things are happening the boy plays a big part. There wasn’t really anything I didn’t like about this book.
I would recommend this book because it is empowering and gives off good messages. It’s a book where I never really felt bored and I never wanted to put the book down. It’s the kind of book that I wouldn’t mind reading again.
