‘Why the Sky is Blue’
By Hannah Albee
Hera, the guardian of marriage, was apart of the “Big Twelve”, and the wife of Zeus. He was the king of the gods, and she the queen, but alas, she was lonely. Her children refused to mind her, and her supposedly loving husband was unfaithful.
“I am much more faithful than he.” She thought, then sank into a deep despair. Tears spilled forth from her blue eyes, and her regal form crumpled. The tears fell down to the earth, burying it in the rivers cried by the queen of the gods her self. Down the water ran, falling for months, perhaps even years.
Demeter returned overjoyed from her recent trip to the Underworld (To visit her daughter, Persephone) finding what had become of her lands. Her fields of fruits and grains had been destroyed, and she grew angry.
“O’ Zeus, brother, King of the gods, listen to my plea. Your queen has drowned my earth, bringing the plants and other inhabitants despair. Should I have control of the water and the sky, I would lift it, but I do not.”
The sky rumbled with Zeus’s call, as he called to his brother Poseidon, god of the sea. Poseidon answered Zeus call, and came to his side. Together they lifted the river up into the sky, where Hera’s tears could forever weave it’s light.
