To Kill a Mockingbird

Imagine living in a time when skin color made a difference. If a white man took a black man to court the white man would win. My book is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book consists of three main characters: Scout, Jem, and Atticus. The book is told through the eyes of Scout. You get to see what it was like to grow up in the 1930’s. You will learn pro’s and con’s of having a lawyer for a dad. You’ll also learn the amazing story of Scout and her life.

The story begins by describing the setting. The setting is a little town called Maycomb. Maycomb, Alabama is a small town that never grows. On Scout’s street there are no kids. During the summer this boy named Dill comes and visits his aunt. Throughout the book Scout, Jem, and Dill have many great adventures.

The kids main goal in the beginning is to get Boo Radley to come out of his house. They give many attempts to get him out but each fails. So instead they write him a letter and put it on the end of a fishing pole and try to sneak the note through the window. This attempt fails too so they give up.

As the story goes on the kids start to understand a little more than they should. Jem and Scout’s father is Atticus. He is a lawyer and a pretty good one. Well about half way through the story Atticus gets assigned a case he knows he can’t win. Atticus has to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. Tom is accused of assault on Mayella Ewell. Since it was back when segregation was still huge, if a white man took a black man to court, the white man would win.

Later in the story Bob Ewell, Mayella’s dad, threatens Atticus. Little did Atticus know that Bob meant business. When Jem and Scout are walking home from the halloween pageant they are attacked. But the story doesn’t end there.

I really enjoyed reading this book. At first the book was kind of boring. But as the pages went on so did my excitement for reading. It was a really outstanding book but it was also educational. It taught me what it was like to live back in the 1930’s.

I would recommend this book to middle schoolers and older. I would suggest waiting a little because of the language and insults used. Overall this was and an amazing book and one of the best books I have ever read.
