Smoking Should be Illegal in the U.S.
by: Anna
Many people around the world smoke. Some have been doing it for a longer time, and some have just started recently. Either way, smoking is bad for your health, and it should be illegal because it is very addicting, causes lung cancer, and smells bad.
First, smoking is addictive, because even if you want to quit smoking, you may find it difficult because you’re addicted to the effects of nicotine. Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical inside a cigarette. If you try to stop smoking, the loss of nicotine can make you depressed and anxious. You also have cravings for the chemical if you try to quit. About 43.8 million adults smoke from a cigarette today. That means that those 44 million people have been taken over by nicotine.
Second, smoking is bad for your lungs. The cigarettes contain chemicals that are harmful for your health. Breathing in just a little of these chemicals can be harmful to nonsmokers. When I walk along the street and see someone smoking their cigarette on the sidewalk outside of a building, even that little bit of smoke that I breathe in when I walk past can be harmful to my lungs.
Thirdly, smoking causes many types of cancer. The National Cancer Institute says that over 70 of the 7,000 chemicals in nicotine can cause different types of cancer. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body and diminishes a person’s overall health. Smoking is also the leading cause of many types of cancer. It causes cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach, and cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia.
These three reasons and many more are why smoking should be illegal. It is very addictive, and it can take over your body with its addicting chemicals, smoking smells bad, and even just a little smoke you breath in can be harmful, and smoking can cause cancer, mainly lung and esophagus.
