MY WIKI PROJECT ON PTOLEMY'S GATE

Ptolemy's Gate is about a magician named John Mandrake aka Nathanial. He is a highly ranked magician in the British government. He has done many good as well as bad things with the help of his djinn friend Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus is a complex character, with shades of gray. Although he does not like humans because of his history of being enslaved, at the same time, he also helps people from evil. The problem with Bartimaeus is that he has trouble determining exactly what side he is on -good or evil. When a rouge magician named Quintin Makepeace releases a very powerful demon on earth, Nathanial must summon Bartimaeus once again because he is the only demon that can save the world.

I would recommend this book for 7th graders because it is an exciting book with a great plot and complex character development. Bartimaeus is a good character- complicated, and funny. It also has fairly advanced language.

This book was banned because it had magic (i.e, occult and fantasy) in it. Apparently some parents do not want their children reading books about wizards, witches, and demons because they think that they will join a different faith and abandon their original religion. Further, they think that their children will start drawing strange shapes and summoning things in their houses. Personally, I do not understand their point of view. I think that parents that want to ban books like this have no imagination and don't want their children to have one either. I do not thing this book should be banned just because It has magic in it.

Why guns should be banned in the US

On November 10th the New York Times reported that a fifth child died from the school shooting in Washington State. After the Sandy Hook Massacre another 44 school shootings have happened in the US. This is  why I think guns should be banned in the US-because there is no way in which we can ensure they are used properly, they encourage other people to use guns, and they are extremely dangerous

There is no way in which we can ensure they are used properly because they are too easily accessible. You can get a gun in any convenience store. If somebody just goes into a convenience store and buys a gun then you have no idea what they are going to use it for. Thousands of people buy guns every day, I guarantee that at least one of them is going to try and hurt someone with it. If thousands of people die every year because of guns then why are they so easily accessible? People have to draw the line at some point, they have to remember that guns are weapons and they can kill people. Even a small altercation can turn deadly with easy availability of guns.

Another reason guns should be banned is because they encourage other people to use guns. One of the main reasons guns are so popular is that people see them on on every TV show, game cover, and movie. The entertainment media uses guns whenever they can. According to CNN gun violence in movies has tripled since 1985. I think this is bad because many people's lives revolve around entertainment and if the first thing they see when they see guns on everything they watch or play then they will start thinking that using guns in public is ok since they see people do it all the time. What is the point of putting all of these guns in entertainment?

Another reason why guns should be banned is because they are  extremely dangerous. One bullet from a gun can kill somebody with ease; guess how much bullets cost- $50 for a pack of 100 bullets. There are some automatic guns that can shoot 30 bullets per second, that is potentially 30 dead bodies per second. I have no idea why weapons of warfare are allowed to be carried around in public. It is so simple for somebody to put a gun in a backpack or suitcase, go into a public place, and proceed to kill everybody in that room. If you want innocent people to survive then there is one solution- ban guns in the US, the only people who should be allowed to use guns are police, FBI officers, and military.

In conclusion, guns should be banned in the US because they are dangerous, they encourage others to use guns, and there is no way we can ensure they are used properly. I have given many examples of why guns should be banned in the US so i hope you think the same way now that you have read this.

Science fiction story called How The World Ended.

Imagine the future, the far future, the year 2016.

The world if vastly overpopulated with a population of over 20 billion people, this is depleting the world’s natural resources extremely fast. Within 2 months the world will not be able to support its own population. Scientists around the world are desperate to find a solution, hospitals are being shut down, having children is becoming illegal, and some countries are already in anarchy.

One scientist named Bobby Vyrus has created a highly infectious nano virus to eliminate the entire human race. He started his virus in New York. He injected a sample of the virus in one man, within three days over 4 million people were infected with a virus that nobody knows exists. The virus was designed to stay dormant in the body of a human until over 19 billion people were infected, little did he know that there were 20 billion people on Earth!!!!

“I should say hi to my neighbor.” Said Dr. Subramanyum. “It has been 3 weeks since he has left his house.” He knocked on the door and said “hello, is anybody home.” After he heard no answer he tried opening the door, it was unlocked. He was what was on the table and said “oh my……. 911 I have an emergency.”

“Now why would a scientist with such a promising career commit suicide.” Said the FBI agent. “Wait… what is this, is this a note.” He said. “Let’s see what this is about.” The note read, “The ending has begun, your only chance will be KC=21827?” “It is out of control, it is unstoppable, and I already have it. There is no chance for me, the deadly version is already inside of me. If you are reading this you are going to die, call somebody, and tell them to stop it.” “Log on to my computer to find what it is.”

“I am confused.” Said the FBI agent. “What does this mean” “It sounds like this old man was senile.”

The FBI agent saw a computer on the desk. “Hmm… I wonder what the password is, let me try 123456789....What…it worked?” He said. He logged on to the computer and saw a message. The message said 19 billion inf. Mutation starting. Insert kill code to terminate_ _ _ _ _. It also had a skull that says 0%.

“What kind of video games did this guy play?” said the FBI agent. “It looks like one of those games where you destroy humanity, well… I guess this world could use a little less of a population.”

The FBI agent called his boss to file the report. He said “Hey boss, I found some weird things, there was a message that said some strange things.” “The message even said I was going to d-.”

3 Months later

Breaking news: A brand new virus has been reported in New York. It appears to be completely harmless but according to the CDC it could become dangerous. Citizens of New York are allowed to continue their normal activities. Thank you for listening to our news report.

2 Months later

The disease outbreak in New York has gone Viral (pun intended), across the world people are being reported having this disease. Although it is a harmless virus, people are warned not to make contact with infected people. Some symptoms include coughing and vomiting.

2 Years later

Breaking news: The virus that started a few years ago in New York is highly deadly. As of now, over 10 million people are dead with infection rates in the billions. Gas masks are being distributed around the world. Citizens are warned to not be within 100 feet of infected people, unless they have a gas mask.

1 year later

Breaking news: This is the final news report, all international transportation is being shut down due to this disease. Hazmat suits are required to be worn by everybody. We are sending 100 million uninfected people to space to find a new planet to colonize, meanwhile people on Earth are to try and survive as long as possible. I wish to say a final goodbye to everybody. Thank you for listening and good luck.

                                                                                                                                            MY POEM

Do you ever see the ant walking under your boot?

Do you ever see the deer running in the grass like a car driving on the road?

Do you ever see the cow standing tall and giving you free milk?

Now do you see your food, try and look for the body parts that were taken from a living thing.

Your food used to be a living thing, it had a life just like you.

Then it was killed, to satisfy the human bloodlust.

What did it do to deserve this fate?

Now look at your family and pretend you were an animal.

How do you think they would feel if you were eaten as food or  killed for sport?

How would you think they would feel to see you head mounted on a wall?

Think about that and remember, we are not the only trees in the forest.

We are not the only things with emotions.

Now next time you go hunting or eat food, remember the cow standing tall, the deer in the forest, and

the ant on the ground.

Remember, they are living things too.

 Career report

Some values that I think are important are money, fun/pleasure, and helping/service. I think that money is very important because you cannot live a very good life if you do not have enough money to support your needs. I also think fun/pleasure is important because if you do not find your job fun, then you will not live a happy life because you will spend a large portion of your day doing something you don't like. Lastly, I think helping/service is important because what is the point of learning a lot of information if nobody else can learn what you did.

To be a surgeon/physician, you need to have a doctorate or professional degree and you have to have been medical school. To be a surgeon or physician you also must care about people and you must be willing to work very odd hours in order to treat patients. I do not think I would be able to do this job. I do not think I would be able to do this job because I have never worked odd hours and I don't think I would be able to memorize thousands of diseases and their symptoms.

In the future, I want to get better grades because 5 A's and an A- is not good enough. In the future I also would like to focus more on school homework assignments because normally I finish school homework in 5 minutes and immediately do something else.

My essay on the Salem Witch Trials

                                 By: Prithvi Joshi

A lot has been learned about the Salem Witch Trials. A lot has been learned about how they happened, a lot has been learned about the court, and a lot has been learned about the victims. The Salem Witch trials were a dark time in history. The reasons behind them are puzzling, but the tragedies that occurred in that courtroom have been with us since the incident.

The Salem Witch Trials all started with over-religious colonists. There was an outbreak of smallpox, as well as tension between many people. In general, times were tough. And who do overly-religious colonists, going through bad times, most likely to blame for their problems? That’s right, Satan. But they haven’t seen Satan…. perhaps he has created witches! The colonists thought about this, but there was no evidence of witches in Salem, so they gave up this theory. A slave named Tibuita, was telling children stories about witches. She was discovered and convicted of witchcraft. But, soon after, the children that Tibuita told stories to, became sick. The children would have violent fits, moments where they were completely zoned out, moments where they would cower in fear, and moments when they were completely normal. Doctors were baffled, they had no idea what caused the behavior, but when one doctor diagnosed the children with “affliction by witchcraft” the community was consume by terror. And thus, the biggest and bloodiest witch hunt in America’s history, began.

The court of Oyer and Terminer was the court that everybody went to if they found a witch. The techniques that they used were primarily spiritual, so many of the convicted people had no chance of defending themselves. The court also used the afflicted people to testify against the convicted witches. One way they would use the afflicted people was to force the convicted people to touch an afflicted person during a fit, if the fit magically stopped, the convicted person was a witch who stopped the fit. If a person was guilty of witchcraft, they had two choices, they could say nothing and be hanged, or they could give up the name of another witch and be put in prison for a few years. When somebody was about to be hanged, they had a chance to recite a sermon from the bible. If they recite it correctly, they were proved innocent. The court used this method for a very long time, but when hundreds of people were being put in prison, they started becoming skeptical that so many people were actually guilty of this crime. Eventually the courts were shut down, but not without ruining the lives of hundreds of people.

During the trials, 20 people were killed and hundreds of people were imprisoned. The first person convicted of witchcraft was Tibuita, she was given the choice of naming other witches or being hanged. She named two people: Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. When they were arrested they named witches, and when THOSE people were arrested, they also named witches, and so on until one person named Bridget Bishop was arrested. Bridget did not name a witch because she did not want a person to be arrested. On that same week, Bridget was hanged in public. The promptness of her execution left people worried about themselves, and the first doubts about the trials had started. Many more people were hanged in public. One of those people was a reverend named George Burroughs. George was famous for accidently, mortally wounding somebody in a bar fight. He was convicted for many reasons including “inhuman strength granted by the devil.” He was taken to the execution field and given a chance to recite the sermon from the bible. He recited it so perfectly that the spectators had tears in their eyes. George was executed anyways because “the devil granted him the power to say the sermon.” After his execution, more people started to doubt the fact that these people were witches. Some people even started to send messages saying the trials were inhuman and unfair to the accused. One of those people was a man named John Proctor.

John was a very famous and highly respected man. But one of the afflicted children accused his wife of witchcraft. John went to court, saying that it was ridiculous that his wife was a witch. The court said that she was a witch, but she would be spared because she was pregnant. John on the other hand…. He was trying to protect a witch, this means he must be a witch!!! John was sent to prison for a short while, but he did not know any other witches. John was executed that same week. This left the community in an outrage. Many people were against the witch trials after this. But the last straw was the killing of Giles Corey.

Giles was hated by most people. He was put in prison a few years before for killing his farmhand. But his death was a very important step in ending the trials. Giles was accused of witchcraft by an afflicted child, but he refused to testify. No matter what they said, he refused to testify. If he testified he would lose his property and his children would never own the house. Instead he was sentenced to a "peine forte et dure.” A "peine forte et dure" was a kind of torture where the prisoner was stripped naked and forced to lie down on his back, a board was put on his belly, and then over the course of many days, heavy stones would be put on the boards until the prisoner dies or agrees to testify. Giles refused to testify, instead, he endured the torture for 3 days before dying. He kept saying things like “more stones” and “kill me faster.” His horrific death played a big part in the ending of the trials.

In conclusion, the Salem witch trials were a dark time in history. People have learned about how they happened with of over-religious colonists and a smallpox outbreak. People have also learned about the court of Oyer and Terminer and their strange spiritual methods in court. Lastly, people have learned about the victims of the trials and how unfairly they were jailed or killed. Although people have learned a lot about the trials, we are still missing lots of information such as why the afflicted people were acting so strangely.

Sequel to the Giver

Jonas woke up to realize he was on the bottom of a hill. He had no idea how long he had been asleep, but the snowstorm had gone away. As Jonas stood up, he realized Gabe was missing. "Gabe! Gabe!" Jonas called. But after one hour, Jonas gave up.  Gabe was long gone.

As the Giver opened the door, he saw a baby on the doorstep. "What? Gabe?" the Giver said. The Giver had no idea how Gabe could have possibly been there. The Giver realized that he had to hide Gabe in his dwelling and make sure he did not get found.

                                                                                                                             15 years later

Gabe was almost 16, he has been living on his own since the Givers release 2 years earlier. Gabe had received every last memory from the Giver before his release, and he was determined to finish the job Jonas had started. Gabe packed his bag with a one year supply of food and went away from the community.

The weather started out fine, but that changed quickly. Before Gabe  realized, he was trapped in a snowstorm. He ran as fast as possible, determined to escape before he was claimed by the storm. After over two hours of frantic running, Gabe saw a tower. The tower was over 500 feet tall and shaped like a toothpick. Although he did not want to stop his journey, Gabe realized he would have to take shelter. Gabe entered the tower and saw a young man, 20-25 years old at most. "Come and sit down, we have a lot to talk about." The man said.

"Who are you?" said Gabe. "I go by many names." The man said. "But you can call me Jonas."

"Oh my god...."  said Gabe. "How did you survive.... and why didn't you continue your journey." "You don't understand Gabe....their is no society, it is all snow, nothing but snow."

Said Jonas. "But, when I found this tower, there were blueprints for a time machine." Said Jonas. "It took 15 years, but I have finished building it. I knew you would come back Gabe, I knew it was your destiny to undo the wrongs we have done. Now tell me Gabe, are you ready to do what is right?"

Gabe had no idea how to respond. "I dont know what to say" Gabe said. "But if this machine truly works, I can finally end sameness once and for all!" "Jonas.....take me back to

2035."

Jonas did as he was told. Jonas would never know if Gabe succeeded, or if the time machine even worked at all! But Jonas knew that somewhere, the Giver was smiling down on him.

                                        Earth Day Poem 1

Earth is like the air around us

We can't live without i

But very few people care

Jobs are more important

Cheap products are more important

Entertainment is more important

Money is more important

So if you really care bout Earth

Stop destroying it

                                                                 Earth Day Poem 2

Today is Earth day

Today is the day to celebrate the beauty of our planet

Today is the day to stop destroying Earth

It is not enough to just say you will fix Earth

Earth is like a human

You can only use it so much

Before it is gone

Now I leave you with this

Instead of throwing away your unused material

Use it one more time

Reflection for this years English.

I had very few problems with this years English. The topics we did were closely related to the things we studied, the length of time for each assignment was more than enough, and the feedback given was excellent. The group assignments could have been better in my opinion, some people in the group did all of the work while others did nothing.

This year I learned quite a lot. I learned reading strategies that I would not normally use, I learned how to work with groups, and I learned a lot about English in general. I still did not like some of the group assignments since very few people actually worked but otherwise I liked this years English.

I liked using the wiki since it was a good way to keep track of the assignments you did and to see how your writing has improved over the year. I also liked the wiki because it incorporated technology into writing which I thought was a good idea. I think the school should continue to incorporate technology into English.
