VIDEO GAMES: Actually good for you!

"Get off the computer!" they said. "It's bad for you! they said. Well, they were wrong. Video games are actually good for you(mostly)! Some reasons that they are good for you are: they can have educational elements, they can be good at calming you down, and they can even improve your alertness and focusing! And I'm going to explain all three! Let's do this

The first reason that video games are good for you is that some games are actually educational! for example, the game Kerbal Space Program is a game about sending little green men to space(or to die trying). The game requires advanced math to even get to a stable orbit, and probably requires a degree in engineering to get father than the moon. Fortunately, the game teaches you as you go on. Lots of games also have hidden bits of education. For example, in the game Portal, There's a TON of science in place. Also, there is a program called MinecraftEdu that teaches kids skills like math and English using Minecraft(if it wasn't obvious...). Moving on!

My second reason that video games are good for you is that they are good at calming you down. Let's say you got into a fight at school, and you are still really mad. Luckily, you have the game Proteus on your computer, a game specifically made for calming down with ambient music and sounds. Tons of games have bits you can use to calm you down, and usually they work really well. Lastly, video games are good for you because they improve how alert and focused you are. There have been tons of studies on this. They have been on people like office workers. A list of these studies, summarized can be found here: kotaku.com/.../25-video-game-violence-studies-summarized

In conclusion, video games are good for you because they can be educational, they are good at calming you down, and they help you be more alert and focused. I think everyone should play more video games so they can get these benefits. Game on!

The Day the Computers Attacked

It was a bright sunny day. Everything was good. In fact, some might say that it was a perfect day. Too perfect. That day, July 21st, 4128, was the day the computers attacked.

It started in North Korea. Life there was still horrible with 3001 technology, with a little 4128 mixed in. The thing was, North Korea was no longer on Earth. The entire population had moved to the planet Gliese 581 c after the sun died early. The new USA was a little smaller than it was before, and the new biggest country was the Netherlands. Everyone was used to the new life, even with the Vulcans with their pointy ears and logic sharing the planet. The planet still needed a simpler name. Everyone was debating on whether to call the planet "earth" again, OR "New Vulcan". Because of this, everyone was not really aware of things going on in other countries. So, North Korea devised a plan to cause the downfall of the rest of the world. Their top programmers were working on a computer virus that would cause everyone's computers to start brutally attacking their users.

DATE: JUL 21, 4128

MIDNIGHT, NORTH KOREA

"The virus is now active." A programmer in North Korea had just pressed the big red button marked "활성화"("Activate" in Korean). Suddenly, all of the people who were on their computers at at that moment were brutally murdered. Within hours, news broadcasters has started to alert the population of the virus. Unfortunately, no one was really listening. So, people started dying mysteriously without a trace all over the planet.

"I hate being grounded!" Orion, a 15 yr old, yelled in his room. "It's so boring!"

"Oh, get over it," his dad yelled. "I'll be on my computer if anyone needs me."

Suddenly, the house went silent. Orion pondered about what what was going on, what his dad was doing. When suddenly, he remembered. The clicking from his dad's mouse is reaaaaally load, but he heard nothing. He carefully opened his bedroom door and walked downstairs.

"Dad?" Orion said as he opened the study door. His dad was on the floor. Orion gasped in shock. He rushed over and felt fro a pulse. Nothing.

"I just don't believe it!" said Orion. After a few seconds of utter silence, Orion's supposedly dead father twitched. Then again. And then once more. Orion nervously flipped his dad on his back. What he saw was unbelievable.

A network of electronics was sprouting from his father's back. It was growing every second. Orion knew he had to stop it somehow, so he grabbed his father's EMP gun he got during the Great War. He shot the EMP at his dad, hoping the electronics would stop. But nothing happened!

While Orion tried to think of what to do, a loud crash knocked him down. A loud chat of "Update!" could be heard outside. A storm of what appeared to be androids flooded the house, no doubt in search of any human life.

Suddenly, a hand grabbed his shoulder. It was the hand of a man with a laser gun.

"C'mon!" he said. "Let's get out of here before they get you!"

Orion, extremely confused, ran with him. They ran through the house, into the backyard, and into the wood. After a while, they reached a bunker. The man waved his hand and a door on the wall of the bunker opened. Inside, an elliptical portal was on the wall. The man and Orion walked through the portal and into another room. The portal closed behind them. Another man in a suit and tie was at a meeting table. He stood up and looked at Orion.

     "Welcome, Orion." the man said.

"Welcome to the Omega Resistance."

Career Report

As a 7th grader, I thought that 4 values were important. I thought that honesty, helping, respect and fun were very important. I think I am a good learner(independently)

My career I researched was a train operator. They drive trains (if it wasn't obvious). You nee a high school diploma, and you get $52400 per year. This career relates to me as I really love trains(especially high speed ones)

In the future, I plan to go to oxford and get a degree in engineering. I hope to get my PhD as well. Also I hope to get the job i researched after college, but I will do part time work as a high-schooler as well.

The Normandy Invasions of June 6, 1944

The D-Day invasions were one of the best organized and most successful invasions of WWII. The Allies (UK, USA, Canada, Free France) attacked five beachheads in Normandy, France. In the end, the entire operation was delayed by only 2 days, 1000 German soldiers were killed, and 4500 Allied soldiers were killed. The result was worth the casualties as the Allies now had a huge front to invade Europe from. This huge attack took lots of organization.

Section 1: The Plan

In 1944, the Allies were planning an invasion into France via the English channel. The operation, codenamed Neptune, involved attacking five beaches in Normandy, France. These beaches were called Omaha, Sword, Utah, Gold, and Juno. Unfortunately, these beaches were heavily defended by German forces. The Allies had to divert the Germans away from the beaches to another place that an attack might come from, like Calais. The British came up with deception plans, involving dropping tinfoil to confuse radar operators and fake paratroopers over Calais. These plans turned out to be a huge success later.

The beaches chosen for the invasions were important as they needed to be close to each other, but not too far away or too close. Omaha, Sword, Utah, Gold, and Juno beaches were about the same lengths away from each other, and they were chosen because they were also far away from Calais, where the Germans were expecting an attack.

Weather was also a key role. High winds and heavy waters made it hard to stage an invasion as this only gave the Allies a few days to choose from in the month of June. The

original attack was to be held on June 5th, but bad weather caused the Allied forces to reschedule to June 6th. This picture shows the routes of the Allies into Normandy.

Image

Section 2: Weather

Invasion planners had to look at very specific scenarios accounting wind, tide, and even the amount of moon showing. Preferably, a full moon should be in the sky for the highest tides and most illumination for pilots. The Allies wanted the attack to happen before dawn, between

low and high tide, with the tide coming in. This would improve the visibility of obstacles on the beach, while minimizing the amount of time the troops had to spend exposed in the open.

The attack on Normandy was originally scheduled for June 5th, but conditions on the seas showed heavy waves making it impossible to launch a landing craft and low clouds obstructed pilots from seeing their targets. On the evening of the 4th, the captain of the RAF (Royal Air Force) met with American Commander Dwight T. Eisenhower and his meteorological team. The choices Eisenhower made could have changed the entire war.

Eisenhower's team explained that conditions would improve sufficiently so the attack could go ahead on the 6th of June. Eisenhower considered postponing the attack, but this would involve withdrawing troops already prepared to cross the Atlantic, increasing chances they would be discovered. Also, the next time with the correct conditions would be two weeks later, from 18 to 20 June. If he had postponed the attack to those days, it would have been disrupted by a major storm that lasted from 19-20 June.

Section 3: Allied Battle

Although very difficult, organizing the landings was the easy part. Now the Allies had to attack. At Utah Beach, the American VII Corps attacked. At Omaha, the American V Corps attacked. Most casualties happened there, because of high cliffs. The British XXX Corps attacked Gold Beach, and the British I Corps attacked Juno and Sword. At Utah beach, high winds pushed the landing crafts 1.8 km away from the intended area to land, but this site turned out to be better than the intended site. At Juno beach, landings did not go as expected, causing casualties

when disembarking. Sword Beach had probably the best landing, but one of the worst attacks. as 21 out of 25 DD tanks (amphibious tanks that could float on water) made it to shore. Casualties were estimated to be around 1000.

Section 4: German battle

With most of the German army stationed at Calais, there was little defense at the beaches for the Allies to fight. In the movie "The Longest Day", a film about the events of D-Day, Germans are hiding in a bunker, unsuspecting attack. When one soldier looks out the window with binoculars, Allied ships appear in the distance, cueing the song "Symphony #5" by Ludwig van Beethoven. "The Longest Day" is probably one of the most realistic films depicting D-Day, but that's for another paper. Germans defending the beaches were:

* 716th Infantry Division guarding Sword, Gold, and Juno beaches,

* 709th Static Infantry Division guarding Utah Beach,

* 352nd Infantry Division guarding Omaha beach.

Also, during the attack, Adolf Hitler, the German leader, was asleep, weakening the Germans even more. When calls went to the German officials about attacks on Normandy, they ignored it as they thought that it was a diversion away from Calais and the real attack would still be there.

Section 5: Result and Effect on WWII

In the end, the Allies had won with 4414 casualties, but the Germans only took 1000 casualties. The Allies now had a huge front, 97 km long and 24 km deep to invade Europe from. However, the Allies failed to complete all their objectives in the first day. Carentan, St. Lo, and Bayeux remained in German hands, and Caen, a major objective, was not captured until the 21st of July. Only two beachheads were connected on the first day (Juno and Gold), and the rest were not connected until the 12th of June. Fortunately, the Allies now had a foothold that they could expand from in the coming months.

So how did this affect the war? The Germans now had to defend THREE fronts, in Normandy, in Italy (Sicily) , and in the Soviet Union. D-Day ultimately caused the liberation of most of Western Europe, like France, Belgium, and Holland. 11 months later, Germany surrendered and the war in Europe was over. 4 months after that, the Japanese Empire surrendered, and WWII had won with a decisive Ally victory. The day that the war finished in Europe just happens to be on my birthday!

Conclusion

D-Day was one of the best organized and most successful invasions of WWII. Even though the Allies lost more men, they still conquered a big piece of land to expand from. Nowadays, there are countless memorials, cemeteries, and museums to commemorate this historic event. If you ever get the chance to go to Europe, going to a WWII museum is a must! More people definitely should learn about this amazing time in history.

My Perfect World

My perfect world is based on 3 principles. No money(in a good way), no disease, and FTL travel. These things will significantly improve human life, with extremely good effects.

My first concept in a perfect world is no money. This simply means that if you want something, you get it."Replicators' of some sort make food out of nothing, eradicating hunger. "Holodecks" make  any scenario possible. You could play poker with Albert Einstein if you wanted.

My second concept in a perfect world is no disease. Holographic doctors and MRI scanners that fit in your hands will make diseases easy to find before any serious effects appear. Perpetual motion machines cut toxic emissions and stop global warming in its tracks, slowing disease even more.

My final concept in perfect world is FTL travel. Humans can use starships and massive schools to educate people about FTL science. These starships could explore space for new life and defend earth. People could also use androids to operate ships when there is a long distance to travel while the crew is in suspended animation.

In conclusion, 3 concepts are in my idea of a perfect world. These concepts are no money, no disease, and FTL travel. In my opinion, these things will have great positive effects in humanity's existence. If I ever get to power, these concepts are what I would use.

REFLECTION FOR ENGLISH

This year in English was very fun. We started the year with a persuasive essay, which I did on video games and their benefits. I thought that this activity was fun, considering I got to write about a topic I enjoy. The next fun thing we did was when we got to make public service announcements with Photostory, a slideshow software. Blake and I got to voice it. After this, we read the book Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, which I thought was quite entertaining, but not THE most entertaining thing this year.

The class focused on poetry in the winter. I did not enjoy it as much as the other activities. Ironically, my parents loved my poem called "Rivals". Go figure! I am most proud of my other poem, "The Octosquid", because it's inventive and funny(ish)

We got to write a research paper about some very interesting subjects like D-day. After that, we read the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. She is a great author and I seriously recommend her work. I shall be reading more of her novels this summer.

We got a chance to dream about what Our Perfect World would be like - just like in the novel.

We did more poetry, and this time it was for Earth Day.

Finally, we were put into literature circles and each group had to read a book. The books were very interesting, and my group got to read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie. We filled in role sheets as we read to show our progress in our book. After we finished, we presented our book to the class with the plot, characters, and setting. This activity was probably the most fun out of all our projects in the year.

All in all, English was enjoyable. To help inspire our writings, we got to go outside and take walks. We even got rained on which makes it quite memorable. When doing the above assignments, we got to go on the computer and type the assignments here, on the wiki. After doing this class, I have become more open-minded about reading books. Non-fiction books are my passion and this year's fictional novels would not have been my first choice in the bookstore, but I am glad to have gotten the chance to read them. I have Mr. Kabodian to thank for an entertaining and enlightening year!

Great job on the video book review, Teddy! I love that you put in your own voice/personality and humor. Sounds like a book I would enjoy...if I could stand the "romanciness"....
