Tips for Writing a Book Review

  • Begin with a clever and dynamic opening line.  Don’t be afraid to write the review in first person or to include personal connections.
  •  At some point in the first paragraph (or as a title), include the title of the book and the author.
  •  Provide a brief summary of the basic premise and plot of the book, but don’t give away the ending.
  •  Provide main characters names and a glimpse of the main conflicts in the book.
  •  Try to include a quote from the book if possible.
  •  At some point, try to provide a reference to at least one powerful moment in the book.  Share some example of why you liked the book that you think will appeal to your reader without revealing key plot twists or endings.
  •  Explain why you would recommend or not recommend the book to other seventh graders.
  • Rate the book out of 10 then explain why you gave it that rate.
